Cash for Clunkers

There are dealers that are owed over 3 million dollars.......The fact of the matter is the dealers were starting to get the hell out of the program.

that would be about 750 cars sold in a little over a month for that 1 dealer, who on average only sold about 115 cars in the same period, that means he took in about $12.o million dollars in a little over a month from the avg $15k plus that he got for every car sold...in a period where he would have only taken in about $2.0 million in sales at the normal trend of sales of 115 cars sold......CERTAINLY the $12 MILLION this guy took in addition to the $3 million owed for the clunkers is ENOUGH to get him by, until he gets our check to him!

They got back at the other end Jreeves....all those huge commission checks to the car salesmen get taxed, the dealer's overall business profit gets taxed, the Auto makers producing replacement cars business gets taxed, the businesses making auto parts for the replacement car inventory gets taxed and those workers making them get taxed on their salaries etc.

I do think our gvt takes a hit, but not as big as the $4500 per car!

Since the government is not paying the dealerships the dealers are taking the hit:cuckoo:

Do you HONESTLY believe the gvt will not pay them?:cuckoo:

listen s0n.........thats not the point. The fact that the dealerships cant get the $$ to cover cash flow IS the story, effectively making the whole program a PR stunt that turned out to be a total joke!!!:

Who's paying the interest on the loans to pay sales commissions, while the dealers sit around waiting for their rebate checks??

You can bet your ass it isn't Barry Obilshevik or any of his bureaucratic toadies.

They got the money to pay the commission checks from the new cars sold...please review the example I gave to Ozz on the dealer owed $3 million.

My uncle owned a dealership, and depending on who the dealer represents, the auto manufacturer, gives the dealerships "DATING" on the cars....they display them and do not have to pay the auto manufacturer until the car is sold or they only have to pay the manufacturer a portion of the cost upfront, and the rest within 30 days of the car being sold.

The Auto manufacturers can cut the dealers some slack, if they do not get the rebate checks immediately.

Remember, that dealer complaining he was owed $3 million from the government, TOOK IN A MINIMUM OF $12 MILLION from the sale of those 750 cars he sold, during a period where he normally would have taken in only $2 million....from 115 cars sold.

Seriously, most companies are used to getting "dating" for themselves on what they purchase from others of 30 days or 60 days, ( I always tried to get my vendors to give me 60 days dating) before they have to pay for what they bought....this allows them to try to sell the merchandise at retail BEFORE their bill is due to the vendor/manufacturer....These same dealers, should give this GRACE period, to the federal government, that they try to get for themselves on all other things, imo.

The JOKE is on you my dear, for being too young and ignorant, when it comes to business...

This was a huge blowout for most all dealers...selling something 6 and half times faster than they normally would can be called nothing other than a retail success for these dealers....they should be kissing us tax payers feet!!!

We'll see shortly. First they must be reimbursed or many may be out of business. Two, will sales now contract to previous or worse levels? How long for a rebound from this? Could see more layoffs at the factory if there is major slowdown.

i am uncertain if cars are the same as other retail businesses Annie, but if they trend similar, their sales will suffer the immediate month afterwards, then start picking up again the 2nd month following to their normal trend of sales or even a slight uptick....

the massive sales in the shorter period put alot of product, in to the hands of the consumer that other people ''will get jealous of or experience envy'', or in other words...will fall to the luring tenth commandment, of ''coveting thy neighbor's goods'', other people will want to purchase a new car....moreso than if just a few people are getting new cars a month....

sadly, capitalism relies on COVETING what someone else has....it's nearly a proven mathematical formula that can be counted on!

Cars should see an uptick in sales after the initial immediate drop the month following the event end....is my best analytical guess....:)

The Obama administration has declared the wildly popular 'Cash for Clunkers' program a success, saying it has revived the country's ailing auto industry and taken polluting vehicles off the road.

But the data shows that the program, which ends Monday, has apparently benefited foreign automakers more than their U.S. counterparts.

'Clunkers' Program Benefits Foreign Automakers More, Data Shows - Political News - FOXNews.com

yes, usa auto dealers got only 47% of the sales....and toyota had the number one car sold...it still was a very, very successful event...the foreign car manufacturers produce their best selling vehicles here in the USA....even Hyundai said they were calling back 1300 people to work...in an alabama factory, i believe?

us auto manufacturers can LEARN from the success and build off of it....see what cars sold the most, even from competitors, try to fill their own voids and stock up on the types of cars consumers wanted most, and come the end of year sales, INSTEAD of spending marketing dollars on ZERO percent Financing deals they should plan their events around giving the customer EXTRA, for their trade in...this seemed to attract consumers at this time, and it gives the consumer more money down for the new car, and will help with their qualifying for a hard to get car loan....

I agree with your standard. Should know in another month or two.

"Cash for Clunkers" is just another silly Socialist scam. The only ones making cash off this farce is the Japanese auto companies. It's just a shame that our MSM is so corrupt and in bed with this administration to report reality. :(

yes, only time will tell....

i remember the first time i experience a phenomenal sale such as this, which way outperformed my expectations, it scared the pajesus out of me....i was certain i would crash and burn the rest of the year, on my sales and lose ALL that i gained from the colossal event....i mean, WHY would people continue to buy the same product at regular retail when the event was over? I was sure to fail, and lose what i had unexpectedly gained?

And the month following, i crashed....sold almost 30%-50% less than i had planned/expected on my key items from this vendor....I was biting my nails....then....the 2nd month came and i was back on sales trend, third month i was beating my sales plan and trend, and at regular price vs the annual sale event price!

the next year, same vendor had annual sale event....I did very well, but not nearly as well as the first year i ran the event (it lost excitement of being new, first time event)...still excellent sale, but again, the following month, crashed and burned, 2nd month on trend, 3rd month...having increases on product at regular price....

CARS are BIG TICKET items....they could trend differently than small item retail....this is the unknown for me....thus saying, time will tell if my best guess is correct. :)

You really don't think that ALL of the USA car dealerships, and car salesmen made out Big Time? Or the banks and financial institutions getting all those loans to the people buying them, are making money?

Even Hyundai had to call back 1300 workers at one plant in the South....Toyota having to do the same....HERE in the usa!

It worked.

But admittingly, it was at the tax payer's expense... though not as great a number as the $3500-$4500 each because of all of the taxes the gvt will collect back from the increased sales....

This is what stimulus money, if spent as intended...to stimulate sales, should do!

NOT what it should not do?

But why is that crazy ozz? It did what a stimulus was suppose to do, it spurred sales...

IF you are arguing or debating whether it is a good idea for our gvt to do such, that would be one thing....but this is not the argument that has been presented on this thread....the argument has been focused on whether the program was successful or effective, NOT whether the gvt should have done any of this in the first place?

On that argument i might actually agree with you on some points!

This successful program surprised many especially our leaders. The autoworkers and dealers are thrilled.

Successful indeed, the government takes on $4500 of debt per car, then destroys $1000's of merchandise. Fucking brilliant.

I tell you what care why don't we pay people to go around and take huge chunks out of the roadways. After all the government would collect taxes on the people destroying the roadways. Not only that but we could collect taxes on the asphalt workers and plants that filled the holes back. Oh yeah I am almost forgot we could collect taxes on the people who fill the holes as well. Oh yeah since its new pavement maybe we could charge tolls on these roadways. This plan seems just as feasible as "Cash for clunkers".

Exactly.

All the people calling the clunker program a "success" are merely invoking a variation on the fallacious and thoroughly debunked broken window theory.

yes, i understand jreeves.... and i tend to lean towards your sentiment on bailouts and stimulus programs done by the gvt.

HOWEVER, congress did not listen to me or you and they passed this humongous stimulus bill....on a bunch of things that most of us are clueless on....and they bailed out american auto manufacturers...

I haven't heard of any other project or program that they spent our taxes on, that truly stimulated sales, other than the cars for clunkers program and the First time Home owners credit which gave us a 7.5% increase in home sales.

BECAUSE our congress bailed out the auto industry and we own as much as 70% of gm in mostly preferred stock, us citizens have an interest in our auto industry doing well...and even if we didn't own them, we as a country have an interest in them doing well, with all the aspects of our economy that they do touch in some manner.

I am not and can not be the type of person that wishes our gvt to fail because of ideological differences I may have with them!

I am pleasantly surprised that cars for clunkers worked and generated so much business for the auto industry.

I initially thought that you could only buy a GM or Chrysler car with the C4C program. To help those dealers reduce their inventory. I was surprised when I heard you could buy any car.
