I was just having this discussion as I really can't make my mind up about how I feel about cat collars. Obviously I'm talking about the breakaway kind because they can't wear dog collars for the kinds of places that they can go that dogs can't because if their collar got caught in a fence they could accidentally strangle themselves and die.
However, I have also heard that the breakaway collars aren't one hundred percent safe either because what if they malfunctioned?
So, although our current kitty is strictly indoors that's why she doesn't have a breakaway collar. That and we originally had a jingle collar for our last cat and that had to be annoying for the poor cat to hear a jingle every time that she moved around. Especially since cats can hear in higher frequencies than we can.
I currently think that microchipping is the better way to go although it never worked for the cat we lost unfortunately. As nobody ever brought her into scan.
