Hick, Rosen Spar Over Tax Hike | The Colorado Observer
Popular columnist and talk radio host Mike Rosen gave a thumbs down to Gov. John Hickenloopers $1 billion state income tax designed to increase state spending on education. Rosen joined the opposition in declaring there is no reform just more taxation.
Rosen voiced his opposition to the tax hike because it will increase mandated funding for public schools from 40 percent to 43 percent of the state budget. He objected to mandates that would further impede the legislatures ability to prioritize the states budget to fund projects such as transportation infrastructure.
Initiative 22 proposes a two-tier income tax rate that would eliminate the states flat tax of 4.63 percent. The tax rate would increase from 4.63 percent to 5 percent on income of $75,000 or less; and climb from 4.63 percent to 5.9 percent for income over $75,000.
Hickenlooper claimed its a minimal tax increase of 1.3 percent, but Rosen did the math and declared it would be a 27.4 percent increase on all income over $75,000.As an example, Rosen said, it would add roughly $200,000 on top of $600,000 in state income taxes paid by someone like Rockies First Baseman Todd Helton, who reportedly earned $17.8 million in 2010.
Thats a steep increase. Theres no question, conceded Hickenlooper.
We have an idiot for a Governor in Colorado, suck the taxpayers dry, no wonder long time residents of Colorado are moving out and freeloaders are moving in. Hickenlooper could be Obama's twin.
