Creepy: Vizio TVs Monitor Owners, Report Activity to Advertisers

Advertising "user enhanced experience" is the primary method companies are starting making money, look at Windows 10 and sooooo many others......... They will "see" what you watch and drive personalized ads towards you. Some ultimately may (and I emphasize may) sell you a monthly service free from ads but that would be a big if as they would not make nearly the amount of money as they make from advertisers.
As TVs become more computer like with internet capabilities more and more TV manufactures will go that route, there's too much money involved not to.

You know the federal government has a program that spends millions of US tax dollars on making the consumer feel better about their car purchase AFTER the fact?! No joke.

I don't mind ads, but someone monitoring my behavior I my own home....nope.

Basically, a TV Manufacturer is monitoring your behavior in your home to 'profile' you and selling the data to advertisers....

Gone too far?

I know I won't be buying 'Vizio's now.

Came up a year ago didn't it? Only a moron would buy any of these things. If your viewing habits can be monitored and recorded whose to say they're not compiling profile data on you? "This guy seems to watch a lot of porn..." Ya, no worries there. ;)

Not the least bit surprising. What would be surprising would be if it were limited to Vizio. I'd bet the house it isn't.

I recall 8 years ago when I installed satellite TV (I've since deinstalled it) they wanted me to connect my phone line to it. "What the hell for?" I asked... not getting a good answer I never did it but I think I know exactly what it was for.

Want a background on the derivation of all this? Check out the info in this thread.
