Texas Senator Ted Cruz is trying to force the Obama administration’s hand to label the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization, reports The Hill.

Along with Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), the Republican presidential candidate introduced legislation Tuesday calling on the Obama administration to designate the Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization.

Called the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act, the bill comes in the wake of a string of evidence that the group supports terrorism, and after recent, similar moves from a handful of foreign countries. The bill notes for example that Egypt, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, among other nations, have described the group as a terrorist organization over the last four decades.

In a statement yesterday, Cruz declared,

“As this bill details, the Brotherhood’s stated goal is to wage violent jihad against its enemies, and our legislation is a reality check that the United States is on that list as well."

Some members of the Brotherhood are already on a terror list, but Cruz wants to go to the source:

“Now we can reject the fantasy that their parent institution is a political entity that is somehow separate from these violent activities."

On the bright side Egyptians came to their senses when Obama's puppet Morsi appointed the terrorist associated with the group that committed the terror attack in Luxor Governor of that state. Gee that was a smooth move right? That would have done wonders for tourism eh?

CNN Fact Check: Muslim Brotherhood Terrorists Aren't Terrorists

Ted Cruz did not contend that the Muslim Brotherhood was on the FTO list. Though some Brotherhood arms, such as Hamas, are. He contended that the Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist group. Not that the State Department listed it as such.

Pointing out that the State Department doesn't list it does not disprove Ted Cruz.

Boko Haram originally did not appear on the terror list either even while it was suicide bombing churches and killing thousands of Christians. It was added much later. There are plenty of terror groups that don't appear on the FTO list for various reasons. Adding a group to the FTO list has all sorts of legal, law enforcement and political implications.

The FTO list is not a comprehensive list of all the terror groups in the world. It is a list for legally designated actions by the United States. Furthermore the FTO list tends to contain military wings of terror groups rather than their political parent organizations so the Brotherhood would not be likely to appear on the list in any case.

CNN's fact check doesn't disprove Ted Cruz. It shows that CNN has absolutely no idea what it's talking about. This isn't just disagreement. This is ridiculous ignorance from a news network that claims the ability to fact check candidates, yet its fact check consists of 5 minutes of googling.

The US Council of Muslim Organizations said that its 2nd Annual National Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill Monday was “designed to connect national, regional and state Muslim organizations, community members with their elected representatives in Congress.” However, the ties that some of the foremost organizations making up this coalition have to the Muslim Brotherhood reveal the sinister aspect of this agenda – and underscore the necessity of passing S. 2230, the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act.

Among the principal members of the US Council of Muslim Organizations is the Muslim American Society, which the Chicago Tribune reported in 2004 was one of the chief arms of the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S.: “In recent years, the U.S. Brotherhood operated under the name Muslim American Society, according to documents and interviews. One of the nation’s major Islamic groups, it was incorporated in Illinois in 1993 after a contentious debate among Brotherhood members.”

The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), which openly states its goal of establishing a global caliphate and was listed in a May 1991 internal Muslim Brotherhood document that was later discovered by law enforcement officials. Entitled An Explanatory Memorandum on the General Strategic Goal for the Group in North America, the document lists ICNA as an allied group and states that Brotherhood operatives in the U.S. “must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.”

Also listed in this document among the “organizations of our friends” is the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), the parent group of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). FBI officials ended ties with CAIR in 2008 after evidence in the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) trial – the largest terror financing trial in U.S. history – revealing links between the HLF’s founders including CAIR co-founder and Executive Director Nihad Awad and the terrorist group Hamas, which describes itself in its charter as “one of the wings of the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine.”

There is much more than its links to Hamas to establish that the Brotherhood is a terrorist organization. The Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act itself sets out ample evidence that the Brotherhood richly deserves the terror designation, including February 2011 testimony by then-FBI Director Robert Mueller, who declared that “elements of the Muslim Brotherhood both here and overseas have supported terrorism.” Al-Qaeda founders Abdullah Azzam and Osama bin Laden and its current leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, were all members of or trained by the Muslim Brotherhood.

The first argument is more lawyerly and fits with the Brotherhood's natural strengths. The Brotherhood operates much like the Communist Party. It sets up front groups on top of front groups. It funnels money covertly to them. The front groups deny membership in the Brotherhood. Even though previous raids had actually turned up evidence otherwise.

This is where things will get messy because the Brotherhood is built as a covert organization and the left made its bones defending Communist groups that functioned exactly like it.

So let's get this out of the way. The harder part will be the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act designation. The easy thing will be International Emergency Economic Powers Act sanctions. The left's pro-terror lobby will have much more trouble stopping President Trump if he moves on IEEPA sanctions. They will fight him in court. And as Judge Robart showed, Trump Derangement Syndrome will lead to utterly illegal judicial activism. But it's AEDPA where the real legal battles will happen. And they will take a lot of years.

The argument that the pro-terror left will bet its marbles on is that the Brotherhood is not a single organization and that, in particular, its terror branches operate independently. And that criminalizing it will also criminalize freedom of association.

This is a winnable battle. And it's not one that the pro-terror lobby really wants to have.

This has been going on for a while now in every terror debate. But it will suddenly be a national debate. And the Counterjihadist camp is far more prepared to have that debate.
