In a statement released on Monday, Senator Diane Feinstein (D-Calif) strongly opposed the NSA collection of intelligence on leaders of U.S. allies. This statement comes after several reports that the United States has been collecting intelligence on German Chancellor Angela Merkel as far back as 2002.
This statement wouldnt be so disturbing if Senator Feinstein wasnt such a cheerleader for the NSA, repeatedly supporting the NSAs collection of phone records and information on American citizens since news of the vast data collection program broke this past summer.
In an October 20th USA Today op-ed, Feinstein argues the call-records program is not surveillance The NSA only collects the type of information found on a telephone bill: phone numbers of calls places and received, the time of the calls and duration. The Supreme Court has held this metadata is not protected under the Fourth Amendment.
