Note that seeking change instead of the status quo separates liberalism from conservatism. Hence the word "conservatism". Duh.
Conservatives (1800's Democrats) sought to conserve slavery. Liberals (Republicans) sought to move on to the abolition of slavery.
Conservatives (accurately) taunt Democrats by reminding them of the civil war, but Democrats today in fact should not dispute that Democrats were the bad guys back then; because the Democrats were the Conservatives.
More evidence of this comes from looking at electoral maps of the era. In 1860, Lincoln won states that have always voted for liberal candidates (The North), whereas his Democratic (conservative) opponent won the states that Bush, Romney, McCain etc. have overwhelmingly won:
Conservatives observing that the Democrats were the bad guys in the 1860's are bolstering the argument of today's liberals that many southerners are bigots and kooks.
