Election 2009

If Christie can beat Acorn today it will be a big win for the GOP

I sense the right is already coming up with an excuse if they lose

If it's just an excuse then why is ACORN blanketing NJ yesterday and today?

Wait, did you hear November 3rd is vote your dead relatives and pets day in NJ. That must be why they are there....to help get these voters to the polls. :eusa_whistle:

I got my hand slapped by PoliticalChic for being too abrasive yesterday, so I need to tread carefully here. Terry, have you even bothered to look at the MAJOR government program McDonnell plans to use to attract business to Virginia?
Yep

So, then how is McDonnell's plan for spending tax payer money to help attract private business to Virginia considered by you to be the people of Virginia voting him in because they are sick of what Washington is doing?

Here is the difference:

When you spend government money to make your state more attractive for business (inducements, tax breaks, regulation breaks) you get a return because the business itself is not the engine of government financing anyway (except perhaps in sales tax), it's the people that work for the company (presumably located within your state) all those people pay state income taxes. If you attract "the right kind of business," then you have lots of high salaries paying lots of state income taxes and further, buying all kinds of crap and paying lots of sales tax.

And, SUPER BONUS.....people have J-O-B-S....(you know that 3 letter word that's so important). That means lower social program costs. So, you beat the current deficit problem at both ends.

Why is this NOT considered socialism? Obama's stimulus package amounts to the same principle as McDonnell's, and yet the GOP cries "Socialism" over it?

Come on, really? How about because in this scenario, the government doesn't control the means of production? Did you hear? GM just had to go ask momma Government if they could make a business decision to help one of their suppliers.

And the porkulus did not in any way, shape, manner or form do the same thing. It was nothing but a pork laden pile of profligate spending!

You are not listening. Based in principle, the two policies are identical. Spend tax payer dollars to help create or save jobs. The Federal takeover of GM (which I am STILL against) was done as an attempt to save jobs. The stimulus (which I am STILL for) was intended to shore up our economy and save or create jobs. Bob McDonnell's plan to use Virginia's tax payer money is intended to save and/or create jobs. Why can you not see this?

First, there is no such thing as a "saved job" that's just political tomfoolery. No economist that isn't on Obama's staff believe that is an actual measurable statistic and even the economists on Obama's staff get to the number by using a specious deductive reasoning. It sounds like a 7 year old explaining why it's a good idea for him to have ice cream for breakfast.

The two policies are not identical. One is a targeted small set of policies designed to attract business. That creates jobs. When new businesses come to your state, that equals new jobs. The porkulus was not designed to create jobs or get new businesses to come to the US. This was noted during the VERY BRIEF debate on the porkulus. Most of the porkulus was not set to hit this year or next year, but is back loaded to years 3 and 4. That's why only 15% of the crapsandwich has been spent so far. Instead of focusing on infrastructure building we're cleaning parks and filling pot holes with asphalt. Not exactly a jobs program. Further, the spending in the crapsandwich is government direct spending it is not set to use the force-multiplier of the private sector. By reducing regulation or taxes, you create a friendly atmosphere for business to operate. Then, instead of a 1 to 1 relationship in spending you get multiples like 1 to 5 or more.

That's why it was impossible for government to spend enough in the depression to get us out of it and that is even more true now. But the more government spins its wheels printing money, the deeper into the shit we're all going to go. Do you get it now?

It's pretty amazing to me that Corzine has outspent Christie, has had Obama come out and campaign for him, (that's really not that big of a deal because Obama is always in campaign mode) has the benefit of a third part candidate to suck away votes from Christie and the last
I heard Christie had a lead in the polls by a few points. This will be an interesting night tonight.

If Corzine ends up winning I want to let the people of NJ know that they have lost their right
to complain about their high taxes for all time. They end up voting these guys in and their
taxes go up and they complain about it.I say no more.

What is clear out of these elections is that Sarah Palin has been the most vocal and foreceful national figure for conservatism in each of the three major East Coast elections taking place today.

She has been effectively phone messaging to counter the phone messaging done by President Obama, as well as forcefully countering Joe Biden's most recent anti-Palin energy policy remarks as he campaigned in NY23.

As ABC indicates in this news clip from today - Sarah Palin is emerging as the national conservative phenom. Whether this Palin-momentum can continue remains to be seen, but for now it appears she is going to be playing a crucial role in continueing the conservative gains heading into the 2010 Election...
