WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A former North Carolina lawmaker accused by prosecutors of misusing more than $200,000 in campaign funds on such items as vacations, speeding tickets and haircuts awaits sentencing Tuesday on federal charges arising from the case.

Former longtime state Sen. Fletcher Hartsell was set to appear in Winston-Salem federal court. The 70-year-old Republican pleaded guilty in February to two tax-related counts and one count of mail fraud. As part of a plea agreement, more than 20 other counts arising from indictments last year are to be dismissed.

A document filed by prosecutors intended to lay out the plea arrangement said Hartsell used about $210,000 from his campaign committee between 2007 and 2015 "to pay for personal goods and services for his own enrichment," including vacations, theater tickets and other items. A 2006 state law limits the use of campaign funds essentially to expenses tied to running for or holding public office — and to charity.

And the theater constitutes therapy. I quite agree [/sarcasm].
