Nobody said to ignore immediate needs. A safety net is important but should go hand in hand with measures to make as many people self sufficient as possible, and independent from government control.

We agree, pilot. Another thing to be taken into consideration is personal circumstances. Ex: work requirements for medicaid. I had a co-worker who got 'downsized' at 56. He lost a lot, but he got out his trusty lawnmower and tried to make a living with that service. However his diabetes went rampant and he lost part of a foot. He can still mow lawns but cannot afford healthcare insurance mostly because all his jobs are small, so he applied for Medicaid medical only. It literally saved his life. And he gets by with his earnings for all other needs...carefully. I admire this man. But twice I went with him to DHS due to his disability, and got outright disgusted by the people I saw there. Girls with a passel of kids on cell phones and sporting fantastically professional fingernails. Ugh!
