How long before the Washington Redskins become the second professional sports franchise in the DC area to change their name?

As the NFL team in Washington continues to defend its use of the name Redskins, the franchise often points out that many high schools use the name. What the team doesn’t point out is that many schools are dropping the name, too.

Despite the team’s claim that “70 different high schools” use the name Redskins, several reports have indicated that the number is actually lower than that, and the Redskins are counting high schools that have already stopped using the name. The latest school to drop the name is Lamar High School in Houston, which announced this week that it will stop going by the name Redskins and start calling its teams the Texans.

Wouldn't it be easier and more appropriate to change the name to the Red Necks?

That would be a good name.

If they had a long history of losing, the could be the "Painty Waist Liberals."

yeah too bad washington doesnt have enough class to do the same with the NFL.It offends a lot of native americans so the name should be changed but washington and the government dont care about offending the american people or the native indians they butchered and stole land from.not this great free country here,not this wonderful government we have.

Given the actual population of our Nation's Capital, the team might better be called, the "Government Teat-suckers." That would strike fear into their opponents.

Or, as has been suggested previously, change the logo to a new (red-skinned) potato. The Washington Redskin Potatoes.
