And these guns require a serious background check before sale....why can't the sale of encrypted devices require the same checks? I could care less if my phone is encrypted. Those who are worried should show cause and need.....and show trustworthiness and no trace of criminal or terrorist connections. Unencrypted phones should be cheap. Encrypted phones should carry a steep price...or perhaps a stiff tax....to be applied to free education, college loans, shovel ready projects, replaced obabblecare...and whatever other free shit the libs come up with.

I have to side with the government on this one, a terrorist act took place and info on the phone may lead to others involved. Besides nobody will ever convince me Apple and other phone makers are not using my info anyway

I'm pretty sure that Apple can get into the phone, so they should do so and give the information to the FBI.

However..................building in a "back door" into their future phones will tank their company, because if it got out that the FBI had a back door into their product, people wouldn't buy anything from them again.

I say that Apple should do the phones on a case by case basis, and leave the backdoor avenue alone.

Also, you should have to prove you NEEEEEEED an encrypted phone.

And we need to ban high capacity memories in encrypted phones. All that big memory is put to evil uses. Porn and terrorism.

This should have been handled in secrecy...no one needed to know. Another flub of the administration. And to my point...if you want encryption...show why and prove trust....and pay for it.

I think you are killed in an act terrorism, or a murderous rampage, it is just cause for a search warrant of your phone.

I have to side with the government on this one, a terrorist act took place and info on the phone may lead to others involved.

If you think this is just about one phone, you are very naive. The government waited for an emotionally charged case like the San Bernardino shooters to make an issue out of precisely because rubes like you would fall for it.

I agree if you are the murderer. I strongly disagree if you are the one who was "killed in an act of terrorism". Being a victim is not just cause for a search of your effects.

Nor is this what the issue is all about. The government is trying to force a private entity to commit an act of burglary.

Apple does not have the key to the phone. The government wants them to create what would be a master key to every Apple phone.

Then encryption nemesis has been a worry of government for thirty or more years.

The fact that secure encryption can be created means the government has lost long ago.

Didn't notice I emphasized terrorist act? I'm not advocating the government have access to everyone's phone but after a terrorist act I have no problem with the info being looked at. Make it a case by case thing, Apple unlocks it, let's the government look but doesn't have to give up the code to unlock phones

Yes, I did notice you emphasized terrorist act, which is exactly my point. The government has a lot of phones they want hacked, but they waited for an emotionally charged issue they knew rubes like you would go for. A terrorist attack. THAT is the one phone they knew they could get rubes like you to side with them on. Because it's a highly publicized incident which provokes a lot of fear in pants shitters.

Incremental totalitarianism, by exploiting the fear response of the gullible.

I understand wanting to keep a master key out of the governments hands. Perhaps they could encrypt the crack code and not provide the program to the government and only provide the government with the necessary information they are seeking..

It can be unlocked without giving the government the way and means to do it, cease with your infantile and middle school attempts to look major league. You're not

A house builder creates a lot of homes. Some of the occupants of the millions of homes that were sold commit crimes, and the government wants to search those homes but they don't have the key to those houses.

Then...one of the occupants of one of those houses commits a particularly heinous crime.

The government then gets a warrant to search that house and approaches the home builder to let them into the house. A lot of people side with the government because of the horrific nature of the crime.

The home builder informs them he does not have a key to any of the houses he sold.

The government then attempts to force the home builder to manufacture a master key which could be used to enter any of his houses he has sold.

How much would you trust that home builder's company, or the government, if you owned one of those houses? How much would you believe that master key would never be used by one of the many thousands of employees, or by the government, to enter your house? How likely would you be to buy one of those houses, knowing a master key is possessed by the company that built it?

That's the situation with Apple phones.

Not even close, rube

No one is going to trust that Apple's master key won't be stolen or misused.

No one.

You just said yourself you already bleev they access your information.

It's clear you don't understand the nature of the problem. This is not about the information you voluntarily push out of your phone. There are a lot of companies which access that.

But none of them are able to access your private photos and other information on your phone. Those are locked. Those are what the government wants to force Apple to unlock.

There is no way to unlock the terrorist's phone without creating a key that can be used to unlock every Apple phone of the same generation.

You are the one way over your head here, kid. You are talking about an issue of which you are completely ignorant.

Nobody should be above a search warrant, NOBODY.
