The guy is a lunatic, paranoid over his own coup/attempted-overthrow and trying to play his NATO partners off against Russia. He chickened out from his commitment to let our 4th ID invasion force sweep down through the Iraqi Sunni Triangle. This was the third leg of the stool and left western Iraqi munitions stashes abandoned to Saddam's insurrection and his WMDs trucked into Syria. Everybody in the region hates his guts. And now he's invading Syrian border towns to clean out the hated commie Kurds. They mostly cleared out beforehand and the ones being killed stayed behind to fight. Trump kept the creep on a chain for over two years and now he's doing his thing. It's limited and won't last much longer. The Syrian towns in question left to right are Kobani, Tel Abyad, Ras al-Ain, and Qamiishli....a "buffer zone" against the Kurds.
