Trump tariffs push major U.S. trade partners closer to China

Von der Leyen and Chinese Premier Li Qiang held “constructive” talks today that touch on a possible mechanism for trade diversion in the wake of sweeping levies announced by the world’s first economy.

“In response to the widespread disruption caused by the US tariffs, President von der Leyen stressed the responsibility of Europe and China, as two of world’s largest markets, to support a strong reformed trading system, free, fair and founded on a level playing field,” according to an EU readout, which added that von der Leyen called for a “negotiated resolution to the current situation” that avoids escalation.

“The leaders discussed setting up a mechanism for tracking possible trade diversion and ensuring any developments are duly addressed,” the readout said.

Speculation has been mounting whether Trump’s protectionist agenda will push U.S. trade partners toward China in a bid to redress commercial relations.

Making China great again.

China will not consume EU products. They will allow them to manufacture there and then steal their technology though as they did to German auto companies. They flooded them with cheap EV vehicles.

We need America to win. We need the West to win.

The companies who exported those jobs in the first place are American companies. Labor costs abroad has gone up. Shipping is expensive. So the companies who left in the 2000's because it was cheaper, want to come back because it's cheaper. I was sharing this on another thread:

SEC. LUTNICK: No, it's really automated jobs. It's automated factories- automated factories. But the key is, who's going to build the factories? Who's going to operate the factories? Who's going to make them work? Great American workers.

No one is going to build factories. We have a lot of empty factories since covid. Anyways, I do want the jobs to come home. The important ones. So just tariff those.

Uneducated blue collar American workers are not going to benefit from this.

You do know Trump replaced NAFTA in 2020? So what's wrong with our trade deal with you?

Let us separate the nation into a loose confederation. You go your way. We will honor our commitments as they reduce, and the newer nation or nations form their own federal capitals.

I don't want tariffs to be applied to Canada, I supported Trump as I wanted him to confront China, which he has and each day he seems more determined to get the trillions back, he can if he gets the U.S citizen on board.

If I were him I would hold a press conference and outline the data on how biased it is. All on teleprompter. A serious outreach to the world about Chinas economic (and otherwise) abuses.

The issue for me and Canada is one I try to separate from good conscience. I have every reason to be bitter and I am due to the injustices I have experienced and continue to experience. I love my country and the ideals, however, the reality is the abusers just abuse without accountability. It is they who hate me and my belief in freedom.

I digress. As a pertinent strategy, I don't think Canada should be the target. Mexico, yes. China, absolutely and most critical by far. Canada, some tweaking and demands would most certainly work, especially if the U.S leaned on Canada to actually support civil liberties and not spit on the sacrifices so many made for them to exist.

I suppose this is part of his greater strategy as Canada has definitely not been a good ally in many respects and they should be forced to decide "capitalism and civil liberties which America will support or socialism and a disregard of human rights and America MUST, for it's own interests, reciprocate". Trump can drag us to capitalism and freedom. Canadians would LOVE to be protected by the U.S Constitution I assure you.

The trade deal should be honoured and this in regards to operating with Canada seems to be a pressure tactic. It's clear that the negotiation in 2026 is going to be a very difficult one. I would prefer a CLOSER economic relationship and an easier path for Canadians to become American citizens while both nations profiting from more economic activity.

The EU has a genuine trading bloc. Why not America and Canada (I would exclude Mexico)?

To the extent the matter can be framed as a "the West against China" battle then the West needs to win. But is that rhetorical trap the right way to frame this? The idea that China can be broken as the US recedes from its former leadership position in the world is folly. Prior to the Dotard regime's idiocy the idea was to limit China's influence around the globe by strengthening our alliances. That's over now as the Orange Menace tries to isolate the US and acts as though he is trying to make us a pariah.

America in a Red Alert state due to your debt and lost industries. The clock turns back or all of the West is in grave peril.

NATO rode on the U.S coat tails for decades making the entire world less safe. They now must pay America back so that the U.S can continue to protect the world.

To make up for fewer exports to the US, the EU is going to export to China?

Hilarious!!!

Actually Trump and his team need to put out a commercial with these very clips. Make it a national ad campaign and then follow up with Trump advising the world what he is doing to actually counter these abuses, not just talk about it but act upon the threat.

China was already having troubles with the rest of the world. Countries wanted to do business with us not China before this. Yesterday I heard Japan and South Korea are now reaching out to China to do business with them rather than Trump. Trump is pushing customers into China's arms.

I heard Trump's excuse for not tariff'ing Russia was that we were negotiating peace deal with them and now would not be the right time. But then it turns out Ukraine did get slapped with tariffs. LOL. So fucking obvious.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will visit China and Vietnam later this week, as Europe prepares to absorb the impacts of a new 20% tariff rate.

Sanchez is scheduled to visit Hanoi on Wednesday, the same day the new Trump tariff rates go into effect. Then he will go to Beijing, according to his office.

The visit underscores the pressure on EU bloc countries like Spain to reassess their trade relationships in the wake of Trump’s tariffs.

So tariffs bring jobs back to America.

Glad you agree with Trump.
