How about we don't and just stop regulating who can or can't get married based on arbitrary religious beliefs.

a civil union gets you all the rights and protections and equality that you say you want.

But, admit it, thats not really what this is about,is it? You want to force the majority of the country to accept your definition of marriage and have the govt force it on the rest of us.

That is categorically false. There are quite literally thousands of laws and regulations on the books for marriages that do not legally apply to civil unions.

If so, they should be changed. but how about listing just 4 or 5 of them.

1. A gay married couple cannot file a federal married income tax return.

2. A gay spouse cannot collect Social Security survivor benefits, even though they pay into the Social Security system.

3. A gay couple cannot use the up to $500,000 tax exclusion for the sale of their home.

4. A gay spouse cannot transfer their deceased spouse's retirement plan benefits to their plan without significant tax penalties like a straight spouse can.

5. The Family Medical Leave Act does not apply to gay couples.

The main stuff is treatment for taxing, and regulatory purposes. Spousal benefits for SS etc. But just as importantly are the State regs that do not protect civil unions partners access to health care decisions and visiting in hospitals, ... things like that.

And there's the problem. There is way too much government involvement in marriage. The funny thing is that conservatives demand all that involvement as much as liberals do!

Yes, in an Ideal world we'd completely extract all government regulation of cultural matters. Trying to get authoritarians to let go of their self ascribed moral authority is about as plausible as getting liberals to let go of income tax redistribution.

Nah, anything goes for sex, but we already have/had that, both straight and gay. I think it's mostly about two people wanting to settle down and live their lives and grow old together. To reap the level of same benefits as the straight couples.
