No ‘Settlers’ Allowed in Palestinian State, PA Leaders Affirm

All citizens of Israel are equal. Stop lying

On paper all citizens of Israel are treated equally.

Unless of couse if they want to marry someone of a different faith. Then they are shit out of luck.

Or if they want their child to go to another ethnic group's school. Then they may be shit out of luck.

Or if they are Arab and want to sue the government for land taken from them right after the 1948 War. Then they are shit out of luck.

Or if they want to marry a Palestinian. Then they are shit out of luck.

Nice deflection.

But hey, at least you agree with me that all citizens of Israel have equal rights

Israeli citizens are not allowed to marry Palestinians. This is a gross violation of human rights. Israeli citizens cannot intermarry with peoples of different faiths.

Link? If this is true, it's because there's no civil marriage in Israel, and marriage laws are controlled by the Rabbinate. So that means that even if 2 Jews want to marry civilly, they must go to nearby Cyprus. I've read that secular Israelis are trying to change this.

How can Israel be a nation that has equal rights for all citizens if all marriage is governed by Jews?

Like most countries, the law varies between them.

I suppose you hold this against them in some fashion? So be it. It is not like Arab Nations don't have peculiar laws.

Someone here claimed that Israel treats all citizens equally. Having all marriage governed by Jews puts that claim into question.

Victory67, et al,

Well, I suppose that one could clarify that by saying: "The purpose of this Basic Law is to protect human dignity and liberty, in order to establish in a Basic Law the values of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state."

Christians and Muslims aren't equal under the law if the law allows their mariages to be governed by Jews.

So your objection is not that 'religious' marriages are limited to within the same religion, but that those who made it the law were Jewish?

The law in Israel has some common similarities to other regional states.

(OBSERVATION)

Marriage in Jordan said:
Any person wishing to marry in Jordan must do so according to Jordanian law. In Jordan there are no civil marriages and all marriages must be performed according to a recognized religious tradition. While Muslim men may marry non-Muslim women, Muslim women are forbidden from marrying non-Muslim men.

If you are marrying according to the Muslim tradition, then the marriage must be performed by a sheikh and according to the laws of the Sharia Court. If you are marrying according to the Christian tradition, then the marriage must be performed according to the Ecclesiastical court.

Not so radically different.

While there is no such thing as a "civil marriage" in Israel, there are other marriage arrangements. It is a bit more complicated, but done on a regular basis.

The Israeli government will recognize marriages performed between Israeli Jewish citizens and non-Jews that are performed outside of Israel. Israeli law does permit marriages in Israel between converts.

  • Marriage between Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Gregorian Armenians, Armenian Catholics, Syrian Catholics, Chaldean Uniates, Greek Catholics, Marionites, and Syrian Orthodox: Members of these communities must apply to their pastor and follow the laws and regulations of the particular community involved.
  • Other groups, including Protestant churches, have only de facto recognition; and in the absence of specific legislation on the subject, marriage between Protestants is arranged on ad hoc and individual basis.
  • The minister who plans to perform the ceremony writes to the Ministry for Religious Affairs, setting forth the names of the persons to be married, their nationality, and their religious affiliation. He requests the Ministry's permission to perform the marriage and to issue a marriage certificate.

So, I'm trying to figure out the allegation here. Some regional states the process is easier, and in some regional states, the process is more complicated.

I was told that the Rabbinate controls all marriages in Israel.

Why should a Jewish institution be incharge of Christian and Muslim marriages?

I meant that the Rabbinate controls all marriages between Jews, who constitute more than 80% of the population. I don't know who controls the other 20% of marriages.

I don' think that is accurate. In Israel the Jews are married by Jews. Christians are married by Christians. Muslims are married by Muslims.

There is a big difference though. An Israeli Jew can marry a Jew from anyplace in the world and they can live together in Israel. Israeli Christians and Muslims who get married to people who do not live in Israel must leave the country to live together. They are not allowed to live together in Israel.

That is part of Israel's apartheid legal system.

Are you familiar with marriage laws in Muslim states?? What if a Muslim Arab woman marries a Jew in lets say Egypt. Could they live together in Egypt ??

I dunno. It has nothing to do with Israel's apartheid laws though.

Apartheid is all over the Middle East however, but people ignore it when it is brought up.
