On a hill
In another thread here, someone linked this article... How does the US military stack up against North Korea?

I think it merits it's own discussion.

After WW II, America designed it's military to be able to fight up to 3 mass theaters at once. The number of desired personnel, number of fighting assets for all branches (tanks, jet fighters, bombers, support assets etc.) and the types of equipment - all with keeping in mind the ability to fight multi-theaters at once.
As the decades rolled on, America's military change from protecting core alliances and ourselves to operating as the world security force...with no help from the world.
America also took the brunt of supporting the worlds political organizations (UN/NATO).
Today, America's military assets and personnel are literally peppered all across the globe. And most of those post are there to provide disincentive for local hotheads from starting wars with each other.
And in doing so, America and our allies are more and more exposed to the real world threats...China, N. Korea and Russia. None of these countries, even combined can out spend or out-tech the U.S. Military. Any of the three, on their own, would bitterly lose against the U.S.
However, any of the two combined, or much worse, all three - and they can out number and out gun us. Basically, as this article points to - at some point, no matter how awesome the quality of your military - your opponents QUANTITY of assets...overwhelms your superiority.
And getting the help from the world? Pheh...British military and the Isrealis would be the only real help. The rest of Europe/Canada/Australia...there military has shrunk to such teensy numbers they would barely be able to slow any of the three down.

It is long past time for America to stop being the world security force. And high time for our Allies to start financing their own protection forces instead of relying on an ever more spread thin American military.

I'm afraid the empire will have to learn the hard way that the economic colonization of the planet will come with a heavy cost ultimately. It took Don a whole 3 months to join the endless war party.

What empire are you speaking of? America? That's a laugh, if we are imperialistic we sure suck at it.
However, your economic colonization, also known as global corporatism is dead on.
Take North Korea...in the 60's-80's they were all bark and no bite. A big nothing burger. After the 80's - the world, and specifically American Presidents...continuously ignored and kicked the can down the road - and we have what we have today - an extraordinary unstable and global destabilizing presence that has become a LIKELY source of large scale war. All because world governments didn't want to upset the economic opportunities for themselves.

The flag and diplomacy and the military follow trade: always has always will.

we had a very nice space program, and will again.
we know today, space and military as being synonymous/integrated, is no longer light years away.

aside from being a source of great national pride, the space program was in part so we would control space with satellite lasers, which is what all war will be, soon as the child born today graduates from M.I.T... not that long.

and we thought nuclear weapons were hard to temper. :)

Perhaps, but we don't suck at a lot of things also.
As an example, America is the light of reason in the world. Has been for 100 years. A leaderless America equals a leaderless world. And what happens when there is a lack of leadership? Negative forces move in and prosper.
In no way am I saying America should withdraw herself from the world theater. That is exactly how North Korea turned from a relatively innocuous annoyance to a real and viable threat. In particular, President Bush and Obama failed us because they refused to lead. Not wanting to upset China because party-pocket stuffing corporations didn't want the money train upset.
Trump is in a very difficult position. Kim Jong is very much like a spoiled child, whose protective/enabling parents are China. China is the bad guy here. We are not.

Shining shitty on a hill and such. "Kim Jong is very much like a spoiled child." So is Don, they're made for each other. Thing is, we chose ours. Maybe they'll get it worked out on twitter.

If you think Trump and Kim Jong are comparable, then you are an idiot.
Your an America hater, someone whose eyes are closed shut, refusing to see the enormous stability and positive influence America brings to the world. The problem is we are not big enough to be the only adult in the room. Our partners need to man up and take responsibility and stop ignoring everything relying on good ol' America to handle it.

Russia and China are not going to be great friends ever. They may vote similar in the UN but that is just because both view themselves as the natural rivals of the US. On the other hand we can't hold our empire for eternity. And the moment we start pulling back that vacuum will be filled by SOMEONE.

Are you aware that America's economy is the single largest beneficiary of our having taken the so-called, by you, brunt of supporting organizations like the UN and NATO? How does one know that to be true? Because the U.S. economy is the single largest one in the world.

By and large, everything the U.S. government does is aimed at facilitating economic and financial gains. If there's no material sum of "money in it," it's unlikely the U.S. government will undertake to do or facilitate "it."

Though the U.S. will, when possible, talk about and, to whatever extent possible/plausible, pitch from the moral high ground, merely to hold said high ground is not what motivates the USA.

China, N. Korea and Russia. None of these countries, even combined can out spend or out-tech the U.S. Military. Any of the three, on their own, would bitterly lose against the U.S. However, any of the two combined, or much worse, all three - and they can out number and out gun us.

Have you checked here to be sure of the nature and extent to which that is so? In checking, one must consider that the U.S.' allies will fall in line with the U.S. if an actual war were to erupt. Even if just one U.S. ally joins with us against the three noted nations, outgunned is not what we will be. (The one thing China has that is uncontested on the planet is the potential for military manpower that dwarfs the entire populations of multiple countries together. (Fortunately, China hasn't the money to train and arm all those potential fighters, which is good also for us because we may not actually have a bullet for every one of them. LOL.)

Oh for fuck sake, yeah, they're very much alike and they're acting in the same manner. Make up your mind shoog, either america runs the fuckng world or it backs off and relies upon others to share the burden. But america will never do that, cuz it has to be in charge. And we'll bomb our way to make sure it stays that way. Hell, toppling other governments, even duly democratically elected ones, is nothing new to us at all.
