Operetta

A light opera. Yes - also classed as a musical: a story set to music and dance. We had one every year in my high school. The art department did all the scenery, the school choir, band, and orchestra combined and the productions were well attended by students, parents and others. But that was back in the days when participation and education in these subjects were considered good things toward turning out well rounded students.

Is there anyone on this board who likes the most favorite music of a bygone era known - sadly by fewer and fewer people - as OPERETTA?

Thanks to Star Trek:TNG, I like a lot of classical and opera :) If a piece was used in a movie I enjoyed I'll link it to the movie and dig the music even by itself. Even some a'capella by Whiffenpoofs have found permanent homes on my hd. Their 'O Holy Night' (2003,) was on an episode of "The West Wing" and is really great. Other pieces like Schubert's "Ave Maria" (Maria Callas;) Pavarotti's "Nesun Dorma" (from "Sum of All Fears";) are here as well. :) Only opera I enjoyed on its own was like Nutcracker. :) Version I saw and like was hosted by Tony Randall and was nicely done.

A Christmas Day treat for you Operetta fans.

I'll pass on opera and musicals thank you.

I enjoy classical music especially classical guitar.

Oooh me too. I am sure there is a thread of that somewhere. I will try and find it and bump it up if I can.

I love John Williams and there is a female one, I need to get her name and put one of hers on.

Not opera -- operetta. Significant difference. I can't stomach opera at all but I like operetta. Grew up on G&S (my dad was a player). G&S rocks.

I do love the parodies built upon the works of Gilbert & Sullivan.

Let your imagination run hog wild with thoughts of what ELSE might have been polished and that one magical word.....

It is the only thing that comes to mind when it comes to operetta. There must be more to it than G&S but I don't know about it much. My parents loved G&S.

I like this rendering from Australia...

When I Was A Lad - YouTube

Friend of mine wrote this -- music not on YouTube, lyrics only:

I am the very model of the modern folk musi c-i-an
I like at once to follow and to satirize tradit-i-on.
I listen to those codgers with their ballads from the days of yore,
And somewhere on a closet shelf I think I have a dulcimore

I've been to Philadelphia, Augusta, and the rest of all
The other many models of the modern folkie festivall
I go there well preparèd with a very large umbrell-i-a
And six or seven gallons of the finest bug repell-i-a.

chorus
Six or seven gallons of the finest bug repell-i-a.
Six or seven gallons of the finest bug repell-i-a.
Six or seven gallons of the finest bug repell-i-ell-i-a.

I try to sing in dialect from Cockney to Bulgarian.
I've tried to give up smoking and become a vegetarian.
Though when I sing the melody defies all recognit-i-on
Yet still I am the model of the modern folk music-i-an.

chorus
Though when he sings the melody defies all recognit-i-on
Yet still he is the model of the modern folk music-i-an.

I like the songs expressing matters social and political.
Concerning war, you'll find I am particularly critical.
I can't abide misogynistic movies pornographic or
The slaughter of the elephants in India and Africor.

When I'm not busy singing songs opposing all oppress-i-on,
You'll find me with my tape deck at the local Irish sess-i-on.
I've recorded Celtic. I like Southern Appalachian.
From Texas Swing to Klezmer and from Quebecois to Caj-i-un

chorus
Texas Swing to Klezmer and from Quebecois to Caj-i-un
Texas Swing to Klezmer and from Quebecois to Caj-i-un
Texas Swing to Klezmer and from Quebecois to Caj-i-a-ji-un

(I know) Bluegrass and Old-Timey are not in the least synonymous.
I even used to know a song whose author was anonymous.
My bearing and demeanor all support the proposit-i-on
That I'm the very model of the modern folk musici-a-n

chorus
His bearing and demeanor all support the proposit-i-on
That he's the very model of the modern folk musici-a-n

From nine to five I work as a computer statistic-i-an,
Which makes him quite the model of the modern folk music-i-an.
