Bottom line, since 2014 Putin has wanted to attack and take Ukraine over. During Trumps administration, Trump was criticizing and wanting to end NATO, which in turn would have made an attack on Ukraine much easier for Putin. Since Trump did not win in 2020 and Biden came in and tried to strengthen NATO again, Putin had no choice but to invade, given that Ukraine was trying to get into NATO but wasn't in it yet. It made is an absolute priority to invade before that happened.

As far as your contention that Trump slapped sanctions on Russia, here are the FACTS
