Now I think it was a bad decision by the courts because free association should mean free association (not to mention if I'm dumb enough to turn away a customer then my competition will be more than happy to get a customer) but the court disagreed and there we are.

Next time, don't have a sole proprietorship or simple partnership. Having an LLC would have protected her personal assets. She was a stupid business owner and a bigot and it's going to cost her.

If she wants to own a business, she has to abide by the rules society has set up, including have a license, not violate certain safety standards, provide for handicapped access, and not against discriminate employees or customers. If she can't go along with those rules, she can't have a legal business. She chose to not abide by those rules. She can lobby to change those laws (and could have before it was even an issue), but for good or ill it's going to be a hard sell to convince We The People to legally allow discrimination.

Now, you're conflating her fine with her losing her home. She made a business decision and didn't incorporate. Incorporation protects business owner personal assets from being at risk along with business assets. Single owners and simple partnerships put their owners' personal assets at risk, while simple corporations such as LLCs don't have that problem. It's just the way the laws are structured for businesses and have been for well over a century. This is covered in any Intro to Microeconomics class. She put her persona; assets at risk by not incorporating. She could just have easily lost her home if a customer sued for falling or if her business went tits up and went bankrupt.

As far as you thinking the fine is out of line, the courts hit people and businesses hard for a reason: to discourage other businesses from doing more of the same.
