Revere, MA, of "Red-coats are coming" fame will be voting on a $1.3 billion resort casino tomorrow.

Revere (city) QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau
Population: 53,179; median household income: $49,933; persons below poverty level: 16.0%. Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo strongly supports the casino.

Large turnout seen for Tuesday's casino vote - Itemlive.com: Business
"A host community agreement reached in December would guarantee the city up to $33 million in upfront payments and between $25 million and $30 million in annual payments if the casino was built."

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter. Anything similar happen in your town, not that Revere is exactly my town. I do know it fairly well though. It will probably not surprise anyone who has read anything I have written I am not one to believe the promises made from large money that they will not run over anyone they need to to get that last dime. While Revere is a bit run down it does have a rich history and the scar of a casino would most likely be forever. Do the surrounding towns, Malden, Everett, Chelsea, become the minimum wage waste lands of the casino's staff?

There are many casinos in my area. they are on tribal lands but some are not owned by the indians it is foreign monies that are invested. I don't go to the casinos but many do.

This is the casino, Mohegan Sun | Home. It is wanting to move from Connecticut to Revere, MA. I believe it is tribal and on tribal land now. It raises a very interesting question I will have to look up. You know anything about tribal casino rules?

They hire members of the tribe first, outsiders only if they need them.

Unless Italians are related to Indians you can, fa get aboot it.

I wonder if they have blueprints. The current Mohegan Sun Sky Tower is 487' high. Wonder how that would look sticking out of the ground in revere. It would be the 19th tallest building in all of the Boston area.

Some people enjoy gambling. We must not allow them that enjoyment. Pronto.

Some people enjoy gambling. We must not allow them that enjoyment. Pronto.

It is not so much that I have a problem with gambling (I have a problem with it but that is another story). A couple years back I was talking with someone, not in MA, who was telling me how cash strapped the local schools were. As they were telling about all of this I asked, “Wasn't that lottery passed a year or so ago suppose to bring in millions for education?” He stopped a minute and realized somehow we got the lottery but never got the education funding. So when the casino makes grand statements about how many millions of dollars are going to pour into Revere this is what is really going to happen: Every well-heeled and well-connected snooker player in the Boston area is going to smell cash and suddenly there will be at least two dozen new business addresses in Revere. Now the people with money know people with money and it is the ole “you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours” and somehow all those millions will fly right over the heads of all those citizens of Revere. What about those citizens of Revere? Well that waitress working at the local diner for $10 an hour and with a Pell Grant to Bunker Hill Community College just a couple stops down the Orange line, well she is going to get laid off. Why? Because Mohegan Sun, with its dozens of shops and dining pleasures is an attraction far better than that ole diner in Revere. So she gets laid off. She had better get a job quick because the Republicans blocked the unemployment insurance extension. Luckily the casino is hiring, at $7.25, Republicans blocked the minimum pay raise. So now she has to work more hours, which means BHCC is now out of the question, doesn't matter anyway, Republicans just defunded Pell Grants. Now she is working all the hours she can get, which aren't many since illegal aliens are working under the table since Republicans blocked immigration reform. She is forced to go on Welfare just to make ends meet. Now Republicans point at her and say, “See, just someone living off others. Vote Republican so we can cut off her Welfare. We need to give it to the capitalist so we can all benefit from trickle down economics.” So by all means, bring the casino to Revere. Won't be the first time a historic relic of these United States gets run over by greed and lust of power. Pride in America begins with our history and continues into our future. Don't let them steal that from us.

The vote today in Revere, MA is more than just a piece of land, it is for the town of Revere itself. Today some people will vote against the casino and some people will vote for the casino. If the people who vote against the casino win then this time the casino will not get approved and will either look elsewhere or try again later. Without the casino the people of Revere will have to work to build their town on their own, they will have to run their own small, local businesses, pay their taxes for their fire and police, and send their kids to the local schools. If the people who vote for the casino win the first thing the casino is going to want is to not have any more votes. This will mean putting whatever money is necessary into local elections so that pro-casino politicians are elected. If there is one thing a casino is good at it is getting all the money so another priority will be drying up all the local businesses that might be competition; food, entertainment, lodging, and such. Next there is the question of labor. A casino is a very labor intensive business and local labor is reliable labor. For a business cheap labor is good labor. What is the biggest enemy to cheap labor? Education. Think public schools in Revere are going to get first priority for funding if the casino arrives? Think again. If the politicians have be financed by the casino, all local businesses are dried up, and education is abysmal then there will be no more votes against the casino. There will be millions flowing into Revere just as the casino promised but Revere is not going to be planting flower beds in the center of town with that money. It is going to be driving from the "casino zone" straight into Boston with the windows rolled up and the doors locked because "that side of Revere" is a dangerous neighborhood with crime and drugs. There has already been corruption with a conflict of interest case. There has been stonewalling as the casino people will not say exactly where the casino is going to be placed, thereby affect surrounding areas. If this is the kind of activity before the first shovel gets put in the ground no telling what will happen when the casino has the power to really turn the screws on people. This is the story of the nation. The argument that big business will raise all boats, that the money will trickle down, that citizens don't need to vote because it doesn't matter. Well today in Revere, MA is does.

My apologies, not really, but this is my rant for the day. I think it also gives a great opportunity to show the difference between perceived benefits of "free enterprise" and reality.

Mohegan School, PK-5, in Uncasville, CT, practically in the shadow of the 487 ft. Mohegan Sun Sky Tower, is rated 4 out of 10 from greatschools. The Montville High School, the local high school, is 6 out of 10. Census has data only for New London Country, which is where Uncasville is. New London Country has 8.1% of its population below the poverty line, state average is 10%. New London population is 274 thousand.

Gross revenue for Mohegan Sun in 2013 was approximately $1.1 billion, $50 million of which was paid out to the Native American tribe.

Well Revere just approved the casino. A few procedural odds and ends Revere should have their very own casino. I hope it turns out well for them.

They're not moving. They just want to open another casino in MA. They tried in another town in western MA, Palmer, but voters rejected it.

True. Thank you for pointing that out. On their financial statement I referenced some posts back Mohegan Sun listed the main location and one in Pennsylvania I believe it was. The gross for CT was $1.1b and PA was $0.3b. I am not sure what they are planning for the gross of Revere. There are still some question of the specifications of the site which have not been worked out. I can't imagine that everything could not be worked out but if it can't the deal could presumably fall apart. My only concern is that the people of Revere have a vision for what that much money coming into the town will bring and I'm afraid the reality is going to be very different. Not that I could have done anything about it but I wish I would have seen it on the news sooner than yesterday. Walden Pond has a gift shop. Why shouldn't Revere have a casino?
