Prepare yourself for World War III.

Russia is sending three more ships to the eastern Mediterranean to bolster its fleet there as a U.S. Senate panel will consider President Barack Obama’s request for authority to conduct a military strike on Syria.

Russia is sending two destroyers, including the Nastoichivy, the flagship of the Baltic Fleet, and the Moskva missile cruiser to the region, Interfax reported today, citing an unidentified Navy official.

Russia Boosts Mediterranean Force as U.S. Mulls Syria Strike - Bloomberg

A U.S. official confirmed that the Nimitz and four other ships moved into the Red Sea earlier today. The official said the carrier strike group has not been assigned a mission and the move to the Red Sea was a prudent move in case its resources are needed to “maximize available options”. The other ships in the strike group are the cruiser USS Princeton and the destroyers USS William P. Lawrence, USS Stockdale and USS Shoup.

On Saturday, President Obama announced that he had decided upon military action against Syria, but that he would first seek authorization from Congress.

There have been tensions before. We don't know that WW3 is going to happen yet.

Granted. It's not exactly looking good either.

The buildup of Russian naval forces in the region, where four U.S. guided-missile destroyers are on station for possible strikes against Syria, posed little threat to the U.S. Navy, Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Wednesday.

Without referring specifically to the Russian task force, Dempsey told a hearing of the House Foreign Relations Committee on the Syrian crisis that it was his judgment that "there are no capabilities that can threaten them" – given the self-defense measures aboard the U.S. ships and other U.S. military assets in the area.

Um, most of our warships are from the same era with the same tech, both navies upgrade certain modules from time to time.

You dont know what the fuck you are talking about.... I was 23 years Navy, I went to schools to learn and counter Soviet weapon systems. Thier technology is old and outdated.

The stakes may get as high as the Cuban Missle Crisis.
But this time, the shoe could be on the other foot as we are the potential aggressor.

You do realize that pride comes before the fall, right?

We need to stop being so arrogant as a people. Or we will destroy ourselves with our stupid mistakes.

It's the equivalent of giving us the finger.

I think Obabble should stand on the deck of one of our destroyers with Beyonce...

Beyonce won't be there. She'll have a scheduling conflict due to giving some dictators son a concert.

More broadly, this debate takes place against the backdrop of the ongoing decay of Russian naval capabilities. While the Russian navy does possess some modern vessels, many of its ships are approaching the end of their useful lives. Despite some recent signs of life, the Russian shipbuilding industry occupies a space somewhere between "troubled" and "moribund." New construction has not kept pace with aging and retired warships. Plans to build additional aircraft carriers to supplement the Admiral Kuznetsov have been indefinitely delayed. The most important recent Russian acquisition project has been the four Mistral-class amphibious warships it purchased from France, two of which will be built in France and two in Russia. One of the key justifications for the Mistral deal has been the potential it holds for reinvigorating the Russian shipbuilding industry, and Moscow held out for months in tough negotiations to make sure that two of the ships -- and not one, as the French initially insisted -- were built in Russian shipyards.
