BBC News - Russia's Vladimir Putin challenges US on Syria claims

Speaking to journalists in the Russian far-eastern city of Vladivostok, Mr Putin urged Mr Obama - as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate - to think about future victims in Syria before using force.

He said it was ridiculous to suggest the Syrian government was to blame for the attack.

"Syrian government troops are on the offensive and have surrounded the opposition in several regions," he said.

"In these conditions, to give a trump card to those who are calling for a military intervention is utter nonsense."

"So I'm convinced that is nothing more than a provocation by those who want to drag other countries into the Syrian conflict."

Some top British military figures question attacking Syria for a different reason:

"He questioned the benefit to the west if attacks killed civilians and pointed out that it was not a simple question whose side the west is on. "We are not going to go on to the ground and separate these two fighting dogs," he said. "We are not sure who we are supposed to be supporting because they may be enemies of ours When the whole of the Middle East is in foment you do not need to throw another grenade in.""

The grenade comment is similar to what the Russians recently said.

Let me also repeat my post from another thread as it is relevant to this topic:

This conflict is no longer about Assad. It is a conflict between Sunnis and Shia. The stakes are high and this has become a proxy war between major regional players:

"With Sunni-led Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey backing the uprising against Mr. Assad, who is supported by Shiite Iran and Hezbollah, sectarian divisions simmering since the American invasion of Iraq are spreading through a region already upended by the Arab uprisings."

"On Friday, an influential Sunni Islamist cleric in Qatar, Sheik Yusef al-Qaradawi, called on Sunnis around the world to go to Syria to fight Hezbollah and Iran, calling them enemies of Islam."

"Alawite militias in Syria have been accused of slaughtering Sunni families. Sunni rebels and gangs have been accused of kidnapping Shiites. Sunni fighters call Shiites “filth” and “dogs.” Rebel commanders have begun to refer to Hezbollah, whose name means party of God, as the “party of the devil.” "

If you don't think the rebels are capable of gassing their own side to turn others against Assad then yo don't understand the stakes. That being said, Assad is a worthless dictator that should not continue to rule Syria. The problem is that the change of regime could be even worse.

This event is a charade. We need Obama to use his 'And most Americans would agree' boiler plate spew and stay out of Syria. Come on Obama... We know.... You will not rest... lol
