A Vermont state senator is facing criminal charges of sexual assault, human trafficking and prohibited acts, the Vermont State Police confirmed Thursday night.

Sen. Norman H. McAllister, R-Franklin, is in the midst of his second two-year term as a Republican senator covering most of Franklin County and the town of Alburgh in Grand Isle County. He has been a successful large dairy farmer and active community member.

The Burlington Free Press was first to report that police arrested McAllister, 63, of Highgate on Thursday evening after he spent the day at the Statehouse working on legislative issues, including an education governance debate. State police plainclothes detectives confronted McAllister outside the Statehouse during a break in legislative debate late Thursday afternoon.

Missouri House speaker resigning after intern text messages

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri House Speaker John Diehl said Thursday that he is resigning from the Legislature after acknowledging that he exchanged sexually suggestive text messages with a college student serving as a Capitol intern.


Diehl said he is stepping down both from his House speaker's position and from his elected job as a Republican representative from suburban St. Louis. Diehl's resignation is expected to become official Friday, when a successor can take over.

Diehl acknowledged "making a serious error in judgment by sending the text messages" to the intern, who no longer works at the Capitol.

The linked story says that McAllister either accepted or solicited sex from tenants that were overdue on their rent. I don't know how that equates to sexual assault.

However, this may open the door for a third party candidate to take his seat.....
