Recognition of the idea of a palestinian state was supposed to be upon a negotiated settlement not absolute unconditional or immediate.
To officially jump the gun and issue a statement of recognition before that time should be viewed irrational and contributing to the present conflict not benefiting a peaceful settlement.
It was not within the preview of the government to recognize a state without a real government or borders that is prepared to take charge of all aspects of being a state in good standing with the world.

Half the palestinians are under the control of a terrorist group. There is not unity. There is no possibility of election. There is no chance of peace with rocket attack on neighbors and calls for violence and death of Israel. There is not hope of financial stability with more than half the palestinians getting aid and services from the UN or other NGOs.

There might be a wish list for the palestinians to have their own state, but it is irresistible to recognize a state before it is really viable.

When the mandate ended, Israel was ready to step up, the palestinians were not and still not.

Just saying you recognize a state does not make a state a reality. It is a bit like recognizing santa claus as a real living breathing person that can fly around the world in 24hrs to deliver presents to every home and child (sorry to those 12yrs and under).

Interesting. The recognition of states is a bi-lateral process. The swedish government is quite entitled to recognise any state it choses to, although if the article is correct it does pose an interesting question of who has supremacy; the freely elected parliament or an appointed committee?
