He's a 50 year old doctor originally from Saudi Arabia who's been in Germany for the past 20 years. I've heard different stories on his motivations, but it seems that he was a former Muslim who was angry at the EU for "Islamisizing it" and this was his way to drop a bomb and bring attention to his concerns. Overall, the guy sounds like he's a total whack job.

I was just a couple of hours away in Dresden (I was over there for work) when this happened and visited that Christmas market multiple times. Ironically, I was wondering while I was there just how easy it would be for someone to commit a terrorist attack in these places. There weren't a lot of barriers at the Dresden market that would have prevented a similar attack, but I did notice a decent amount of police presence.
