Texas Was Warned a Decade Ago Its Grid Was Unready for Cold

This is the third time this has happened.

It comes down to deregulation. The people of Texas want no regulations so this is what they get.

Their electricity is privatized. There are no regulations or any consequences for not upgrading and winterizing. There are suggestions. That's it.

So because it's all privatized profit is put first. Not human life. Thus people are dying in Texas because profit for a private company is more important.

That last time it happened the federal government did an assessment, gave the state a report of what is wrong and how to fix it. The state and the private companies did nothing.

This is going to keep happening because money is more important than human life in Texas.

The people of Texas aren't willing to pay what it takes to make sure this doesn't happen again. The private companies aren't willing to pay what it takes to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Yet where did the Texans run quickly run to first?

You guessed it, the federal government. Biden is sending help. I thought the scariest words in the English language were "I'm from the federal government and here to help." Whatever happened to that conservative "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" and " take personal responsibility?"

The whole damned country is in this kind of shape for God's sakes.

Which other states are having the massive power outages that Texas is suffering through?

Folks? Texas has a huge metropolitan population and it's freaky cold.

Not that big a deal.

That they act like assholes is an excellent reason to revel in their misery but the power grid is fine. If Alaska had 29M people or whatever the number is their grid would have failed too... Ditto for Nebraska, Wyoming, Arizona.... where ever.
So, what happened to that global warming??

Bloomberg (Green) advised Texans to rely on freaking windmills (stalled on ice) and solar energy (covered in a foot of snow). Now it costs more money to de-ice a windmill than it's potential productivity.
Unlike the propaganda you're been swallowing, the truth is that Texas went down because they lost nearly half their power because their natural gas supply was taken down by the cold. It also took down their oil well production, which similarly wasn't designed to function in very cold weather.

Windmills are only 20% of Texas energy, and their primary use is for peak summer air conditioning usage.
Maybe ask Putin for some pointers.

A bunch of right wing dumbfucks decided that climate change meant "global warming" and you've been repeating that bullshit for about 20 years.

If they had 29 million people and what, 20-25M households all turning on the heater at the same time...their grid would be damaged too.

Texas is a shot hole of epic proportions....its the 7th grader who's 18 years old and thinks it's funny that he can't advance to the 8th grade and swears the system is wrong; not him.

But hell...it just got cold. Nobody will remember this in a week.

Infrastructure-wise; Texas flooding is the real chronic disaster. There will be flooding in Houston again this Summer like there always is. It was that way in the 80's when I lived there. They haven't fixed a thing in 40 years. But the governors have all "cut spending to the bone."

Why do they work so well in Russia, Denmark and European countries in their harsh winters?
Because they have heaters that run on natural gas. The Netherlands just put their wind farms off shore. Look it up.
And Texas natural gas infrastructure froze. Which knocked out nearly half their power generation.

Well..I can't speak to everywhere...but the Pacific Northwest begs to differ with you. We got plenty of power..and pretty cheap too! Infrastructure is strong and relatively new. Idaho as well.

Climate change=>weather...(psst..stop repeating right wing media misdirectional talking points about getting warmer. :))

Here's a hint. You don't use electricity to produce heat. Texas uses heat pumps because they work to heat in winter and cool in summer. But the problem is that the heating efficiency drops as the temperature drops, and when you approach zero degrees Fahrenheit, they turn into space heaters.

Russian homes burn coal, logs, and whatever burns.
In my European city most homes are heated by oil or kerosene.
Wind and solar can not produce heat.
I have a country house with wind and solar. No mains electric. The energy generated cannot even facilitate a toaster, kettle or iron. Maybe a radio for a few hours at night. A light bulb. In winter.....nothing.
It's useless.
I'd say you have a shit solar/wind system. My neighbour's solar system is so efficient he gets a rebate from the electric company because he puts power BACK INTO the grid.

Not all Texans agree with our leadership and after this I am guessing Abbot might be retiring after he loses his next run for office...

As I wrote in another thread this is a decades old issue that should have never happened but it did and it will never be fixed because those that run all this just care about the bottom line and even in deaths money will be made...

So I am leaving Texas as soon as I can and will head to Tennessee!

No abbot won't lose. He will be reelected when he runs for reelection.

The majority of the people in Texas put money before life.

They have had since 1989 to make changes. That was the first time this happened. They did nothing. Then it happened in 2011 again. They did nothing. The people of Texas have continually and consistently voted republicans to run their state. The people of Texas voted for this.

Nothing will change in Texas and people will keep dying.

So my central heat would work if my power was off?

Windmills work well here. We have them all over the central and eastern part of the state where normal winters year after year are way below freezing for months on end.

The windmills keep turning and don't freeze.

Because we take the proper steps to make sure they don't freeze.

Texas doesn't.

I will point out that there were no windmills in Texas in 1989 and not as many in 2011.

I will also point out that the fossil fuel electric plants lost twice as much megawatt power as the windmills lost. The windmills only lost 16 mw. The fossil fuel plants lost 30 mw.

The windmills aren't the problem.
