To be fair, if you look at very recent history and you see what nations the US has militarily intervened in or attacked on our own, the common denominator is that those without nukes were bothered and other nations we had issues with that had nukes were not. Having a nuke keeps Americans from invading your nation if your nation has a big problem with America. So I doubt there would be any deal Trump could have made to where Kim would have given up his arsenal.

Was there an instance when, in all likelihood, said unprepared president was told by his underlings, "No, you absolutely cannot be seen surrendering to the other side's demand while getting next to nothing in return"? For that would be taking autocrat-fluffing a step too far?

Either of two things happened: Trump was perfectly unaware what the Kim wanted. Or, he was ambushed in one of his by-now-ubiquitous one-on-one meetings (Art of the Deal!) in an attempt to test his limits and to string him along - North Korean tactics over decades. But the Trumpy doesn't know anything about anything, and, perfectly unprepared for what awaits him, was forced to beat a humiliating retreat from his spectacular spectacle.
