The Decline Of Unions

Indeed. Post WWII the USA had hundreds of steamship companies.

Then, the merchant marine unions got powerful and one by one they killed them all off but one. Mattson is still US flagged because it's a requirement of Military Sealift Command.

All the rest....gone. Victims of the greed of the unions.
Killed them off how by asking them for good pay and conditions?

Yes, they priced themselves, and had so many work rules that the companies couldn't compete with foreign companies.
So a race to the bottom, work rules like health and safety and paying third world wages, without Unions you end up with a Regime like Pinochet in Chile trade Unionists were murdered.

No, work rules that allowed almost 15% of the work force to sit around and do nothing.

The trucking industry was the same. My father was a truck driver, and a devout Teamster.

Till the union work rules, that allowed over 20% of the workforce to sit on their ass, killed his company. He was retired by the time that ot happened, but the result was the same. A good, midsized trucking company driven into bankruptcy.

Why would there be a rule to allow drivers to sit around are you talking about zero hours contracts?

Because the union bosses had friends they took care of. A unionized shop caters to the friends of the union bosses. Have a worker that sucks, the union protects them. Have a worker that is outstanding? The union won't allow that worker to be promoted, or get a wage increase unless everyone gets one. So, productivity drops.

There are a host of work rules related problems that are not just harmful to the employers, but are harmful to good employee's as well.

All brought about by government either regulating the businesses so bad that they had to leave, or they were paid to leave by government intrusion.
Twin Tyrannies, Wall Street and Washington, Both Run by Egoists

If you pick one side or the other, the RichKid Reich and its class-climbing bootlickers will leave you on the sidelines. Anyone who desperately seeks Masters is bait for parasites. He is master-baiting.

You are correct to a point. What you socialists ignore it this, without capitalism to create wealth, socialism eats its own.

Management by Imagination

They're imitating management, which never worked on the floor and therefore has no right to tell those who do what they should do there. The Bizz Skule gradchewits spend their day sheltered in a cubicle, passing ungrammatical memoranda to one another, calling themselves "producers."

Then employees stop working for that employer and go work elsewhere.

The beauty of capitalism. You, as a worker, are free to leave.

Under socialism, you're not.
"My Way or the Highway" Means That His Way Is the Low Way

So one-sided, as usual on the Netrix. How about the employees forcing out the Scrooge and telling him to go work somewhere else? That's what the crew did in Mutiny on the Bounty and The Caine Mutiny.

But partisans won't tell their father-figures to find another family. If rights and force are all on one side, it means unearned privileges, like the King of England had in 1776.

I'm not for socialism. I do see a very concerted effort to chisel away at workers until they're down to not much. I see it more like a plutocracy, of which we are closer to right now. The rich and powerful are the ones getting elected regardless of party. Why can't an average working person break thru?
We Are Born in the Dugout and They Make Us Believe We've Been Benched

Get it through your head that the worst tyranny is from the inherited rich, who did nothing to get where they are.

So "rich" is a meaningless term unless it separates HeirHeads from the others. So is "plutocracy" unless it is divided likewise.

I don't think the head of the dock workers cares if Republicans outlaw unions. He will have got his. And those guys are going to get big raises till automation takes over. So they don't care about the future. They know automation is coming. Just not until they retire please.

Unions are notorious for cutting off their own noses to spite their faces.

Union members are notorious for biting the hand that feeds them. How much do they think these foreign companies who own the docks would pay them if they weren't organized? How much did Archie Bunker make?
you ever been in a union bobo?....

Get rid of unions? That's fine. But there needs to be a conflicting opposition to the employer embedded in the workplace. Compliant workers who never champion their cause are the worst workers.
"All for One, and That One All for Himself"

Fanatical and hypocritical Laissez-Fairies are narrow-minded partisans who glorify competition among the businesses but see competition between workers and management as unproductive and unfair.

You maybe but many are not, why would a bad Boss pay more for a more productive worker don't tell me because he has a big heart.
Applying His Curse to the Others Was What Caused the Depression

Babe Ruth is the most famous example of not being able to get what he was obviously worth from the Red Sox. That attitude is why they went 86 years without a championship. Same with our top-heavy economy, and the UK's too.
