Except that dictators only push policies that benefit them. In our society, murder, theft, rape etc are illegal for a reason. Personal desires that harm others. My reasoning is no different from that.The greater good can not be achieved without government.That should be the model of American politics.

Obviously, someone who sees government as the vehicle to achieve “the greater good”; with individuals as having no higher role than as servants to that government, to be used as government deems appropriate to achieve this “higher good”.
He may very well, indeed, “…know nothing of foundational American thought”; more likely, he knows it and does not agree with it.

Not true at all. Dictators are often great benefactors of the people. Caesar was a dictator, and under his rule Rome thrived. The same goes for Agusto Pinochet.
The majority often pushes policies that are harmful to large segments of the population. Democracy is no more benevolent or beneficent than a dictator.
