Although this is now considered superstition, it could have had a real basis, something like hygiene. For example, touching a corpse could be the cause of plague infection. The dog is sexually promiscuous, so it could be a source of vein diseases, or rabies.

The unclean in different cultures included corpses, reptiles, some insects (primarily scorpions), dogs, wolves(or canine in general), pigs, women during menstruation.

I think it's best to avoid touching these things for now, because there's a lot we don't know about it.

All it takes is a bit of common sense.

Don't touch the corpse of someone who died of a communicable disease.
Wash your hands after you pet (touch) a stray dog.

As for touching a woman during menstruation, that is such a primitive idea that it is laughable in modern times.

The Jews still observe this, at least in part.

Only those who practice the most primitive version of their religion. It is a very, very old tradition with them, nothing more.

Rules against touching a woman while she is menstruating is simply nonsense. There is absolutely no reason and no evidence to show anything wrong with it.
