the French island of Martinique (2.79 homicides/100K). Or the Dutch island of Aruba (1.93).
Even Nicaragua with 11.0, is a lot better than the 31.44 of Honduras.
Same with Panama (11.31), or Costa Rica (17.74), and certainly Cuba (4.99), and Guadaloupe (5.78).

They could have gone there, with less distance to travel, and not be up against a language barrier.

The answer is economic opportunity. The US may be farther away than some of these other countries, but it is vastly better for people to advance themselves economically (and benefit from welfare goodies enticed to them by Democrat politicians & NGOs).
