We once had an asian exchange student renting one of our rooms.

One day he read in the paper about a local man receiving 4 months in jail for animal cruelty to a dog.

He was flabbergasted and ask me if this article was true or just a joke?

I told him that in America you can go to prison for harming a dog or a cat.

He was still having trouble believing me and thought I was pulling his leg.

After all, cats and dogs are on the menu where he comes from. ..

I suppose I could look at the video evidence, but that would be illegal and would get me fired if caught. I think the guy just lost his cool (pun intended) and the owner didn't like it. That's my guess.
