Patriotic costumes hot this Halloween
But shoppers not interested in dressing as bin Laden

by Bryan Chin

The ranks of firefighters are expected to swell Oct. 31, if sales of Halloween costumes are any indication.

Outfits that reflect the country's new sense of patriotism since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks have been flying off the shelves at local costume retailers.

"Firemen are doing very well, as are policemen and army guys," said Steve Diddams, owner of Diddams Amazing Party Store in downtown Palo Alto.

"We had Saddam Hussein toilet paper [during the Gulf War]," he said. "We thought it would sell big at the time, but it didn't sell at all. We also had these Patriot missile pi╥atas which were pretty good sellers, but we haven't seen them this time around."

Diddams says he wouldn't expect Palo Alto residents to buy bin Laden costumes anyway.

"Most people like to celebrate Halloween in the same way they celebrated it as kids, with fun, not-too-scary costumes. This neighborhood and town is pretty traditional like that," he said.

On the financial front, local business owners said they have not experienced the drop in costume sales they anticipated a few months ago.

"We're selling a lot of the same old stuff. Every year the number-one costume is witches," said Diddams.

Interest in dressing up may not be flagging, but Manzini said she has noticed a trend in people's costume choice.

"Everybody last year was a hooker or a pimp," she explained. "This year they look to be toning things down with more creative characters instead of more flamboyant ones. I think there's a mellower mood on the horizon. People are trying to go a little deeper with their costumes." "

Costumes are topical and timely.

Much ado about nothing.

But, if it pisses off Muslims and their fellow travelers, that's a bonus.

Funny stuff.

I guess we shouldn't let anyone wear arab costumes because of what has been going on there?

They could dress up like a negro. Then loot and burn your house down.
conservative idiot chimes-in
Awe, did the truth smack you across the face and hurt?
