This year we learned that the Republican leadership thinks they pick the candidates, not any kind of democratic process
 
They are a private organization and can do whatever they wish to do. The fallout will be considerable but if you're in their boardroom, you seem faced with the choice of having Trump destroy the party on his terms. By that I mean this: They are concerned about all 470 Federal races, at least that many gubenatorial and State legislature races and who knows how many judgships and whatnot. Trump helps in none of them...

They are faced with that or or destroying it on their own terms by setting aside the votes of the members and drafting someone who is an actual republican.

I'm not saying it's the best idea but I can see their logic in doing as such. There are no attractive alternatives.
I think they should just let Trump compete, lose, and start over fresh on 11/10.
