Exactly, the sheeple sea. WE need to use the resources of our solar system and improve our tech.

Improving technology is the answer, only way we sustain. Also, space.

There is no answer for UNLIMITED population growth. You can't solve every problem by improving technology or space. We will probably never colonize another planet no matter how many Star Trek movies there are. That's naive thinking.

Humans can act intelligently. That makes it all the more strange that they don't. How is it that overpopulation is not evident to all? What pushes people to continue to have babies even in areas that are deserts or otherwise untenable for any population increase?
This will end badly in all likelihood.

Why not? mars has water, atmosphere, and resources...A good out post to get at the resources of the asteroid belt. IF we ever figure out "warp" like drive we know there's billions of other planets out there.

I think the star trek version of the future is pretty amazing! I think we should consider ways to figure out to get that kind of a future....Both political, economic and technical.

The combination of the population explosion, peak oil, and climate change pretty much guarantees a colossal humanitarian catastrophe later this century. We are in overshoot mode. Many experts in related areas expect hundreds of millions, and likely billions, to die prematurely.

To answer your specific question about trends in population growth, the single best thing we can do in general seems to be, improve education for women. IAC this is an excellent read:

Trying to settle another planet is a fantasy, at least at this point in our development. Perhaps in a few centuries, if we survive that long.

The premise of the OP is, of course, false. There is no "overpopulation" on a global scale. A more reasonable discussion would be about the allocation of resources.

It depends entirely on one's point of view about population levels. There are many good arguments to maintain saying human numbers are too high for health and safety. Reason would certainly argue for restraint, rethinking and responsible parenting.
The human population has doubled twice since I was born. It cannot do that again. So, just saying everything is fine and can just continue is wrong.

Pretty far from projections of doubling.

I certainly hope a pleasant way out is found.
