Around the time of the Munich Security Conference two weeks ago, the Trump administration began asking European governments what they were willing to commit in terms of peacekeepers to Ukraine.

Poland replied: none. What an astonishing answer from one of the only NATO members that takes defense seriously.

The United Kingdom has indicated some interest in sending peacekeepers, so long as they are protected by Americans.

The rest of the European countries fell into an embarrassed silence, or simply returned to asking for what they always want: verbal and moral input with no material or moral commitment.​

Well, I presume Russia is going to test them out soon enough.

The real danger is getting China, N Korea and other involved. There is also a real risk of S Korea falling to the Communists.

These are very precarious times and I'm starting to believe that some WANT WWIII to unfold. I'm not suggesting the West back down from Russia but they can achieve a ceasefire and an economic relationship which will in the long run hurt Russia more.

The European war party's only play was to send a tiny band of "peacekeepers" to Ukraine, get some of them shot by the Russians, and then demand US intervention in the name of NATO credibility. Trump and Hesgeth preempted that.

What do they do now? Starmer offered 30,000 peacekeepers as a tethered goat, and Trump asked him if he wanted to fight the Russians by himself. The British Army (not counting Marines) has 18,400 deployable combat soldiers--not even two full divisions. I suppose Friedrich Merz could (as he proposed in the past) give the Taurus missile to Ukraine, but I doubt he would be foolhardy enough to do that now, even if his not-yet-formed coalition would let him, which it probably won't. Thanks for playing, Brussels.​

Ukraine got "security guarantees" from Russia and NATO countries in the Budapest Memorandum for giving up their nukes.

Nukes need a lot of maintenance, which Ukraine didn't have.

The deal made sense, until Russia invaded. Even if Ukraine had nukes, they wouldn't use them or get incinerated by Russian nukes.

The security guarantee from NATO countries makes sense, getting enough military aid to battle Russia to a draw.

Since WW2 Europe has enjoyed the unprecedented umbrella of protection paid for by US taxpayers

For a time it was worth it, but the Europeans have become lazy, ungrateful, and dependent.

NONSENSE - that war got started in 2014 due to Ukraine's official bid to join NATO in 2013/14 - a bid that was NEVER rejected by any US Administration - and certainly not by Trump, during his entire 4 years lasting, 1st stint.

And as stated many times - YOUR Trump didn't do shit during his entire first stint, to get Russia out of Crimea nor Donbass & Luhansk. WHY ???

Furthermore what influence or say did Ukraine have in regards to abandoning it's nukes?? It was FOREMOST "demanded" by the USA and Russia. The security assurances the USA/UK and Russia gave Ukraine - proved to be not even worth the paper they were written on.

There is NO WAY to coordinate a NATO strategy, if some Trump (or whatever US president) simply decides to overturn a fully functional defense policy lasting for 75 years in a matter of weeks - to simply please Russia.
