He was the author of "Chariots of the Gods". When I was a mostly stoned, wayward teenager, and Democrat, he convinced me that aliens visited this planet and were responsible for the various religions around the world. I became an atheist in the spot.

What was the must influential part was when I found out it was 100% bull shit. When I saw how badly I was taken for a ride, I vowed never to be fooled again. Which led me to conservatism and a love of truth and knowledge. All that led to a life of success as an adult.

I hope you weren't paying any attention to Fox News. Those bastards spew major bullshit 24/7.

I had mostly negative influence in my childhood - a bad mother who never let me forget I was "a damned kid" she never wanted in the first place, a stint in an orphanage (in reality a child slave labor camp) where degradation and bloody beatings were a daily thing, a life of isolation ... and I found it all so very ugly and made some good decisions early on not to repeat what was done to me. I tried to be a better person.
 
I really cant say anyone had any influence on me other than my father.
Personally i've been influenced by life's experiences over the years and made up my own mind.
Although I liked John Wayne he was more of a kindred soul than an influence.

In the text "Warum ist Gott tot?" ("Why is god dead?") Nietzsche plays with prejudices. Others as well as Christians fullfill this prejudices in different ways. In a philosophical dimension he speaks about that god is dead - and so keeps only the nothing. He says "Nun stehen wir mit leeren Händen vor dem Nichts" = "Now we stand with empty hands in front of the nothing." - "Doch wer kann das Nichts ertragen?" = "But who is able to withstand the nothing?" or "Who is able to bear the nothing?" ... "Seht der Sinnlosigkeit ins Auge" = "Look in the eye of the senselessness." - "Springt in den Abgrund des Nichts" = "Jump in the chasm of the nothing" ... I don't see how Nietzsche overcame the nothing. How do you overcome the nothing? Whatelse than death is your hope?

How does that early experience help you relate to others?

Fairly easily. I sort of "punted" raising my children on some kind of inner messenger to do the opposite of whatever my mother had done. I made them a home instead of just a house. I don't hate "Catholics, Jews and '*******'" (HER word, not mine). I generally try to find something good in people and respect people unless there's a real good reason not to, as opposed to always finding some bogus reason to hate everybody. There was something inside telling me when I was a kid that I was a good person and I had to hang on to that belief. Bottom line is that nobody promised anybody a rose garden - you take the good with the bad, the highs with the lows, acknowledge your shortcomings and keep on going. The bruises and broken bones go away fairly soon, the emotional damage is much harder and longer to work through.

Funny this thread comes up today. My youngest daughter called me after midnight last night ... crying. I asked what was wrong and she said, "Nothing. I just wanted to tell you I love you." Seems she and her siblings were talking earlier about the trauma they're dealing with about their dad ... she told me that NOW she understands what I went through as a child living with a parent who hated me. Time, faith and prayer has a way of working things out.
 
When I though about Nietzsche I found the wisdom of "Die Bremer Stadmusikanten" (The Town Musicians of Bremen) much more important than the philosophy of Nietzsche. So: "Long live the brothers Grimm! Hurrray!" (I modified the following the english text a little. I added the original line of the text: "Something what's better than death I/you/we will find everywhere".)

The robber ran as hard as he could, back to the captain, and said: “Oh, dear! in the house sits a horrid old witch, who blew at me, and scratched my face with her long fingers; and by the door stands a man with a knife, who stabbed me in the leg; and in the yard lies a black monster, who hit me with a club; and up on the roof there sits the judge, who called out, ‘Bring the rascal up here’ – so I made the best of my way off.

From that time the robbers never trusted themselves again in the house; but the four musicians liked it so well that they could not make up their minds to leave it, and spent there the remainder of their days, as the last person who told the story is ready to avouch for a fact.

I've only been going to movies since 1940. I guess I missed that one. Phuck you on the back of a chariot!
