If you read the rest of the article, it stated most of these people are in the custody of other agencies (such as state prison systems) and that many of them came in the first time Trump was in charge.

Here's the ugly secret. ICE doesn't have the ability to detain that many people. They simply don't have the facilities. They rely on local and state governments to hold these people until they can get their countries of origin to take them back, and of course, most of their countries won't take them back because they don't want them, either.

The problem is, the states are strapped for cash and will be more strapped once Trump gets done tanking the economy. Sure, they'll hold on to the murderer, but the guy who got busted for braining Paco with a beer bottle on Cinco de Mayo? Not so much.

It's 22 acres so at best you could only get a 1200 bed Super Max in there after razing the existing structures. Not cost effective at all.

Put your Super Max prisons on top of mountains like Virginia did. Hell, we did not even have to buy the land, it was donated by coal companies.

It's kind of crazy to hold an undocumented immigrant who has committed no other crimes or minor offenses, waiting for his or her home country to take him or her back.

Incarcerating someone costs $35,000 a year. Perfectly worth it for a murderer or rapist, but the guy who swung a punch at a party that got out of hand? Not so much.
