The Trump-McConnell shutdown of the federal government has already shuttered most national offices, with hundreds of thousands of federal workers furloughed or forced to work without pay. In particular, it has wreaked havoc on our national parks, with reports of overflowing human waste, uncollected trash, damage to hiking trails and even three deaths reported as of yesterday, all due to the lack of policing and supervision. Iconic landmarks and museums on the National Mall have been shuttered or gone unstaffed, and the American public has been denied access to them.

Yet a singular, rather obscure historical site has somehow managed to remain open and fully staffed: The clock tower in the Federal building that houses the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Why is the historic clock tower at Trump's D.C. hotel open and staffed during the shutdown?

Because its part of the 75% of government not impacted

No it is not, the National Parks Service is not part of the 75%.

Any more lies?

I guess being concerned for the environment and taking your trash with you when you leave was out of the question.

Unstaffed does not mean closed with the national parks.

You suggesting the hotel has government employees? Sounds like the GSA is in charge, but why use facts huh?

Too bad the NPS isn't in charge of that facility, then you'd have a point.

Our governor arranged for the state to pay for trash pickup at the Grand Canyon to keep it open. The visitor center is closed and the park entry booths are unattended but the view and toilets are still available. Would imagine the hotel operator in DC is picking up the tab to keep the historic site open, figuring it is good for business.

Obama did not have to close the federal memorials in D.C. during his shutdowns. But being the hateful monster he was, he did. There were many veterans visiting who could not take part of the memories of the conflicts they were in. They deserved better. Now I do not know if that is happening now. But there is prescedent.

Still staffed by NPS Rangers and staff. So, who is paying them?

To piss people like off?

“Asked to explain why this particular site was permitted to remain staffed and open, while so many more were shut down, a spokeswoman for the General Services Administration contended that the “law” which put the GSA in charge of the site obligates it to remain open. The spokeswoman also said that the clock tower was “unrelated” to the building’s tenant“
