In essence the Republican argument, is that the free market solves all. Just stay out of the way government and everything will be just fine.
This ignores the fact that our economy cannot run without, say, the military. The money we pour into military defense, contracting, weapons production etc, has literally been the main constant of our nation since World War II. It got us out of the depression and continues to drive our economy to this day. There is no economist, literally none, that wouldn't agree that if we stopped investing such heavy numbers in our military, not even including weapons sales ot other countries which is by far the largest in the world, more then the rest of the world combined, that our economy would falter. Yet this is essentially socialist spending. In fact the greatest inventions of the 20th century came out of government spending. Can a government be too big? Of course. But it can clearly be too small as well. You pull the plug out from our military spending, essentially subsidizing high tech military, our economy goes bye bye.
Second, The free market, while of course needed to an extent, has been proven that on its own if unregulated it can from time to time crash with dire effects on the population. Making health care, for example, solely based on free market principles was as much as madness as allowing the mortgage industry and banks to run amok as they did not long ago. A policy actually initiated by democrats.
The difference between democrats and republicans is simple. They both fervently support sectors of narrow economic wealth. Democrats are typically the finance sector, banks, and health care. Repubs are typically weapons manufacturers, oil etc. Their professed concern for social issues such as gay marriage or abortion, are convenient distractions to the core principles of their parties. These principles being their electorates are the ultra wealthy of whom they are compromise, supported by during their candidacies, and pushed over the top with incessant lobbying. Repubs are at least more honest about this. But both doing nothing for the good of the average American and in fact consistently sell out his needs for big buisness. The top 85 people in the world now are worth more then the next 3.5 billion.
