I used to go there every couple of years. I haven't in a # of years now, and will never again. Too much corruption, and violence.
As I've posted many times on these boards, 5 of the top 10 cities with the highest murder rate IN THE WORLD are in Mexico.
Just am not going to give them any more of my vacation dollars.

I won't go there. They won't let me carry enough of armament to self protect, and they are not able to get control of their organized crime, or possibly infiltrated to the point, they just pay lip service to trying. American are not safe there, even at the resorts.

A lot of Americans like to go to Cancun for the resorts or to Juarez to see their famed donkey shows.

I just hope they are careful, the place looks sort of problemsome nowadays.

The Drug Cartel war has killed over 50,000 people.
They might be even more violent than ISIS.
They are doing things like using chain saws to dismember people alive.

I’m actually considering booking a cruise that goes to Mexico, at what will be a cut-rate price because they can’t sell cabins. It will be a 7-day vacation where I enjoy being on the ocean, beautiful views of ports from my veranda, three great meals a day, hanging around the pool, taking in the shows, trying my luck in the casino, listening to musical performances, relaxing in the spa, exercising by walking around the promenade, and having someone else make my bed and clean my bathroom.

I will stay on the ship.

Nope. Last time I was in Cancun we were driving to Chichen Itza and passed a burning car. Turned out that was an executed police official that the cartel killed and set on fire. Super fun.

Two days later we were diving Cozumel and hit a bar aftewards. I went to take a leak and they were cleaning blood out of the bathroom from a shooting and the walls were riddled with bullet holes.

Beautiful country, and I've been several times to many locations, but I won't ever go back.

Good call.
At least if you stay on the ship, you've got the Mexican navy to help out in an emergency

About 30 times more likely to be able to spend a Saturday night in Mexico than Chicago, and live to tell about it.

Last time I was there, I went to some trucker bar & the hottest chick in Mexico gave me a table dance.

Next thing you know she turned into a blood sucking vampire & killed my brother.
I barely made it out alive

Yeahbut- the only problems came between dusk and dawn, amirite? The rest is easy peasy.

I wouldn't vacation in Mexico if the trip came with an awesome vacation home, a car, a dog and all the free beer I could snarf.

The wonderful culture of Mexico, coming to a city near you.

It was crazy back in the 1990's. With all the news and warnings since then, I can't make myself feel sorry for the idiots that insist on going there anyway. The number of Darwin Award trophies available in unlimited. My mother and aunt flew to Guadalajara a couple of decades ago, thinking that since they would be staying with a friend who was a doctor in an upscale neighborhood they would be safe. When they got to the airport there, the cops were pulling Mexicans out of the line and robbing them right there in the crowds. The 3rd day they were having breakfast on the balcony in the 'nice safe neighborhood' when the police blocked off both ends of the street, pulled two trucks up to a house and proceeded to clean it out, while the owners were at work. The grocery stores smelled like open sewers, water in puddles everywhere, flies, etc. They've never been back.

I drove to Chichen Itza as well. My trip was in a rental VW bug from Playa Del Carmen. It was mostly uneventful, but I'll never try it again.
One time, I drove all the way down the Yucatan Peninsula into Belize. At one point, I turned off onto a dirt road on the way back, and after driving a few miles into god knows where, I was stopped by the Mexican army. For a moment, I thought I was dead, but luckily they let me turn around. I have no idea what they were up to, and I don't want to know.

Another time driving on Cozumel Island, I was pulled over by a cop, and the bastard wanted all of my camera equipment, that was worth several thousand American dollars. He reached in my jeep, and grabbed the bag.
I sternly told him 'NO', and he let go then demanded 100 pesos, which I handed over. This was 20 or so years ago, I suspect the corruption is much worse now.

Yeah, the customs agents tried to seize my fishing/diving gear on the way to Mazatlan one year. I similarly told them NFW, offered them a special "sport tax" of 10 bucks, handed it to them, and went on my way. Lol.
