Has the media made us more cynical about pluralism criticism?

An eerie doodle of a witch made by a 3rd-grade student named Janice Davies was making headlines and being used by society journalists as media-symbols of modernism pluralism-related alternative-religion/metaphysics films such as The Witches of Eastwick. Janice's doodle was characteristic of a modern age social fascination with 'colloquial Occultism' (and Janice's doodle was simple and ideally intelligible --- a basic sketch of a witch!). Therefore, feminists began using/citing her doodle and comparing it to Poison Ivy (DC Comics) media/art. Poison Ivy is an eco-terrorist who plagues a fictional place called Gotham (which was the subject of a praised new TV series on Fox!). Was this serious, or was this merely 'CNN-stylized apocalypto news/mythology high-brow graffiti' (e.g. Howard Stern)?
