Most in the military are obese

Because you never know when you might actually need to fight in a battle.

I realize it is a bit different in the Marines, but every Marine is a rifleman first and whatever their job is second.

The job of the military is to protect the nation.
Seriously, when was the last time that happened?

At a time the services have difficulty keeping qualified soldiers, do you want to discharge someone whose weight does not interfere with their MOS?

Military training is very expensive, often hundreds of thousands to teach specific skills.
You want to discharge someone in the overweight range?

Yes.

It is the military, they made an agreement when they joined, that included maintain height and weight standards.

They should not be using BMI as a determinant though, as it does not address body fat to muscle ratios.

If you can’t meet BMI but can pass the physical standards should you be discharged?

If I am in the Air Force and sit at a console and fly a drone but am fat as shit, what difference does it make?

The Air Force invested a significant amount of money to train you to fly drones. Why waste it?

Really?

The White House on Thursday released results of Trump's annual physical, revealing that his Body Mass Index is now 30.4. That's based on the fact that he's now carrying 243 pounds on his 6-foot, 3-inch frame.

People with an index rating above 30 are considered obese.

BMI alone would classify this as obese...

You break your contract, you get fired ... you're not entitled to fly military drones ... if the hanger floor needs mopped, you're a mopper ... that's a wing-nut on both your shoulders, you're going to do wing-nuts things while in the Air Force ... moppin' cement is just the start of wing-nut things to be done ...

Because you have no disciple and no integrity as shown by not keeping your part of the contract your signed.

What is the risk if a cook, a mechanic or logistics specialist is overweight?
Great point. When I was in the Army (pre-Vietnam) few were overweight. After basic training technical training begins with little or no continuing fitness training. However, I think that 'combat infantry' would be different and fitness would be required.

However, PT tests were given even to us techies. I was never overweight, but I still couldn't finish the mile run in the required time. Even after basic training I was in miserable physical condition.

When one of my kids went into the military near a decade ago, the recruiters combined services had all of the potential recruits exercise a couple times a week until they went to boot camp. They even went to a weekend at a reserve/national guard installation. They were called "poolies". We have a volunteer force as you know and filling the quotas and the MOS billets is a must. The recruiter knows this well. Getting them in better shape was a priority to join.

Pride is a sin ... and so is gluttony ... if cared about my appearance, I'd still be paying child support ... think "Theodore Kaczynski" after a bath ... not proud a'tall ...
Pride in your appearance is not a sin. You must be a slob.

Do muscles weigh more than fat?
The point is that muscles still add to overall weight, and since BMI is a simple calculation of height vs weight, even someone with a low body fat percentage can be obese if they have large muscles.

Muscle is also denser than fat, so muscular people often weigh more than fat people with much bigger waistlines

Biden's military = big fat tub of goo and transfreaks.

It is really concerning that so many of our soldiers are out of shape. Whatever happened to discipline?

To be the correct weight on the BMI chart, you need to get down to just above anorexia level. BMI is probably the worst system to use.

Maybe the McDonalds attraction is too great for US soldiers!!
