It takes warm moist air for precipitation.

And the scenario you mention goes to illustrate.
It's the cold meeting warm moist that produces snow.
I grew up in the Northeast/Midlantic and the ColdEST days were clear as a bell.
The most/heaviest snow was just under freezing.
Nor-Easters are Gulf/Tropical air mixing with cold air from the W/WNW and coming up the East coast.
Warm moist air (which there is more of due to GW/AGW) is what causes more active weather.
Warm water is Hurricane jet fuel.

Yes, of course cold weather is usually under clear skies. A bright starlit night means a cold night in the winter and shoulder seasons.

Because of the 70% RW you menioned, there's little possibility of a decent discussion taking place on this board unless 3/4's of the spammers are just ignored.

Timely post.....It's sleeting outside as I type this....The wife said there's already a big wreck on I-81.

Not unusual this time of year.....I remember Spring gobbler hunting in the sleet once.

I had decent Tom coming in by the sound of him, it started sleeting and he shut right up.....Killed him the next morning though and picked a onion sack full or morels in the bargain.
