Since 1978, cost of college has risen 1200%.
Obviously, Americans don't need an education.
"In 1978, a student who worked a minimum-wage summer job could afford to pay a year's full tuition at the 4-year public university of their choice."
*This applies to in-state tuition only.
Could a minimum-wage earner in 1978 earn enough in a summer to pay a full year s tuition PolitiFact
That was certainly true for me. I remember very well getting paid and going to the univ office to make a payment on my tuition.
Other countries, with much small tax bases, are able to pay for their people's education, thus making an invaluable investment in their own country's future. Those same countries are able to repair and maintain their infrastructure and give health care to the citizens.
The US continues its downward spiral that the right wants.
MW worked for me as well. I made $3.35 /hr in the early 80's while in HS. I worked full time evenings and week-ends. I was able to by a car for $200.00 and with $75 of repairs I had a ride. It only cost $11 to fill up. I could have easily afforded an apartment as well.
There was a time when MW was a stepping stone to a better future. Those days are gone. A college student today would have to work an entire week at MW to afford 1 book.
