Anti-science advocates are freaking out about Google truth rankings

Google could launch an effort to keep trolls and bad information at bay, with a program that would rank websites according to veracity, and sort results according to those rankings. Currently, the search engine ranks pages according to popularity, which means that pages containing unsubstantiated celebrity gossip or conspiracy theories, for example, show up very high.


New Scientist’s Hal Hodson reports on the proposed Knowledge-Based Trust score:

The software works by tapping into the Knowledge Vault, the vast store of facts that Google has pulled off the internet. Facts the web unanimously agrees on are considered a reasonable proxy for truth. Web pages that contain contradictory information are bumped down the rankings.

Yeah this would not be viable.. The government keeps secrets just like everyone else. It would be just another program to help hide secrets and control what is being broadcast just like the television networks do based on speculation without absolute truth. Although I do believe some stuff is just complete utter bullshit that influences people in the wrong ways but we still need determine what is fact and fiction for ourselves. Republicans think popularity is the same as "facts". When NORMAL people do a Google search, like on some field of science, they want sites to pop up that are real. Not "Magical Creation" and other bullshit like right wingers believe.
Of course, Google won't be able to come up with something philosophical, but it will come be able to come up with what a political bill actually says or how many vacation days Obama actually took. If right wingers can't have their bullshit front and center, they think they are being maligned or mistreated. They think that their "theory" that God shimmered man into being from a pile of dirt isn't thrown out there then there is a conspiracy to keep "their" brand of science from being taken seriously.

That's a stupid thing to say. First, Republicans believe corporations are the "job CREATORS" who bring high paying jobs, stability and happiness to unskilled workers who live in America. They think technology has some connection to magic.
The type of algorithm written to do this kind of search will probably compare results to mainstream scientific sites or data released by the bureau of labor statistics or some such place. Imagine wanting to know about Keystone and actually getting information on how long it is, how much it will cost per mile, how much oil it will spew when it leaks and not stupid nonsense like Fox saying it will create a MILLION jobs. Imagine getting the FACTS about vaccines and not right wingers claiming it causes autism or some other bullshit from ridiculous ignoramuses.
Right wingers will simply have to work harder to find the stupid stuff. Not that they use Google now. They don't have to when they are fed the ignorant pablum that oozes out from Fox and their own party leaders.

The right are very much for education and science. They have a different way of wanting to do it. Our Government should not be in education at all.
We were doing very well in rankings of the world until the Government got into it.
The type of Government we have is not set up for government controlled schools like other countries.
We went from number 3 to low 20's.
