1,400 tons seems like an exaggerated number but the ancient Egyptians had no trouble erecting 200 ton obelisks and the ancient Romans had no trouble moving them.

They taught themselves. The built small pyramids and, over time built them bigger and bigger. Same with everything else the man builds.
