My foster mother was a Zigfield Girl and my foster father was an arranger/pianist in the Paul Whiteman orchestra. I grew up surrounded by people from the entertainment industry.
I will never forget the night Jack took me to a dive bar in Pasadena, California. We sat in a boothe and watched an old, blind black man come in and walk to an upright piano against the back wall. The bartender brought him a drink and put a big brandy snifter on the piano.
And then he began to play!
I've never heard anything so awesome in my life. It was Art Tatum.
