Cooper Family Exiled From Tennessee Church For Supporting Lesbian Daughter

After 60 years of active involvement with their Tennessee church, a family is facing exile from their religious community because their daughter fought to pass legislation offering benefits to same-sex couples in the town where she worked as a law enforcement official.

Police detective Kat Cooper, who married her wife Krista in Maryland earlier this year, led the initiative that resulted in Collegedale, Tenn., becoming the first city in the state to extended family benefits to same-sex couples, according to Spectrum Magazine. The bill passed in early August after months of effort on the part of Cooper, spawned largely by the denial of health coverage for her wife despite their legal status as a married couple in states where same-sex marriage is legal.

Cooper's mother, Linda, reportedly stood by her daughter throughout the whole process and embraced Cooper after the city council passed the bill on Aug. 5. A video of Cooper discussing her struggle to get the legislation passed can be viewed above.

However, the celebrations surrounding Cooper and her wife's legal victory were short-lived. Following a Sunday morning service, leaders at the family's regular place of worship, the Ridgedale Church of Christ, asked to meet with members of Cooper's family, including her mother. At this meeting, church officials reportedly gave the family two options: Publicly repent for their sins in front of the church's congregation and ask for God's forgiveness -- or leave the church..........................

Yes I can feel the love. But then I haven't been reading what you are posting about, but rather seeking to serve my fellow man today

Fully within the rights of the Church. The mother made her choice, she has to live with it, and find another church.

I used to have loving feelings of this world, too. But the love of God destroyed that love and now I know the love of the world is only an illusion.

In the next age, all God's people will know His true love, which is knowledge that will never make His people fearful again.

I agree that it is within the rights of the church but don't you think it is a farce for the church to preach about love, acceptance and forgiveness and at the same time treat their fellow human being in such an awful manner just for loving someone else or honoring their own family?

Homosexuality is considered sinful in all forms of monothesitc judeo based religions, from the OT, to the NT, to the Koran. In the sense of the NT, you are not supposed to beat down on said people, but you do not have to support thier lifestlye, and you sure as hell cannot live thier lifestlye. This woman supported said lifestyle, and the Church wants nothing to do with her, as her support broke the tenets of said religion.

She can honor her own family somewhere else.

It's no wonder why churches are having a hard time attracting new members. That kind of "love" we can do without.

From the sounds of it, the Cooper family would be better off finding a church, yes I did leave the word new off deliberately and meant finding a church, anyway. The statement about "publicly confessing their sins and asking for forgiveness" makes me doubt the place they were worshipping at is even a church. My church does that every Sunday. It is called confession and absolution. Are they saying Ridgedale Church of Christ does not confess sins? Seems Ridgedale is hung up on the Law and has lost the Gospel. Time for the Coopers to find the Gospel, most likely the other members as well.

I agree with much of what you said, however, if you ask me, you straddle the line between Christianity and being a Pharisee.

This church seems to have crossed that line. I say seems to because we only have half the story. The way it has been presented is obviously biased against Christianity. The church has the right to explain their doctrine as well as their actions.

It is very possible to love someone while, simultaneously, not being supportive of their continued sinful behavior.

*please note the key word "continued"*

"love" does not equal ignoring ones moral compass.

Surely they can find better people to worship with now.

Since the majority of people calling themselves christian do not live by all of the Bible, I believe this just to be another form of punishment of revenge.
